For us it was 59 years this time and, as usual for us, I cooked. We dont usually go out because around here you can get anything--as long as it's barbecue which neither of us likes. This year I did shrimp stir fry with just about every fresh veggie I could find. For Solstice I'll probably do...
Mine had ignored the laying box for months but FINALLY everybody's laying again except 3 old timers! From no eggs at all to a dozen a day! LOLOL Suddenly all my neighbors are talking to me again and waving as they drive by.

Sadly at this age they only seem to get worse, not better, with time. Can't say I didn't see this coming. With stallions it's Rule #1: Don't get hurt. Rule #2: Remember Rule #1. Roosters are no different.

I've got family visiting from Florida on Tuesday. Our low is supposed to be 22. I've warned them but they're still expecting to wear shorts and sandals. Should be interesting! ;)
Our local grocery has a bulletin board to post pretty much anything on for free. You've probably got something similar somewhere near you. Post him as "free to a good home" and you might be surprised by the response.

Oh sh-t! Please excuse my language, but this is SERIOUS. You are getting into dangerous territory here. I know we've never met but I've been following along here for a lot of years so I think of you as a friend and, as my friend, it's time for you to hear some hard words from me. Please...
For the longest time we had a single eagle but about 12-15 years ago he was joined by another. A couple years later we saw 3 and 2 years ago we saw 4. Now we seem to be back to just 2. Likewise we have always had a ton of cardinals--until this year. So far I've seen--maybe--5. I do worry...
Forgot to mention that I don't free range mainly (but certainly not entirely) because of 2 things: a pack of coyotes that was here when I arrive 20+ years ago that we promptly cleaned out--but not before they got my entire flock 2 and 3 at a time--and an ongoing "problem" with eagles who range...
"Roosters will always compete in a group, even the bantams in the spring, especially, so I expect it. I have no issues with a rooster being his natural self as long as he doesn't want to fight me or cause me to clean up too much blood. If the battles become too much, I can separate them or sell...
I don't free range. I have no tolerance for fighting roosters. This is a big part of why I set up individual pens that are a rooster and 8-10 hens each, or bachelor pens. I feel I have a moral responsibility for my stock, so I don't have any tolerance for any kind of fighting for dominance...
Just ordered only to discover I let my kindle charge run out! Grrrrr. Now I have to wait and I HATE to wait (but it'll be WORTH the wait!!!)

FWIW I've had a couple consistent double-yokers over the years. About 3, as I recall. None of them lived more than a few months. I assumed that producing double-yoked eggs was terribly hard on their systems and was not surprised by their loss at the time. Their sisters who produced normally...
Don't look back. It isn't helpful. All you can really do is keep pushing forward doing the best you can do. Do your best for the ones you've got and resist the urge to compare them to what's gone. That's not good for either you or them. Time will make that easier.
