Maybe. After all, the ndusrty standard for egg factories is only 1sq ft per bird. Or maybe adding more chickens will cause behavioral problems and bullying. After all, factory birds often get the tip of their beaks cut off to prevent them from pecking other chickens bloody and killing each...
The generally recommended minimum is 4sq ft per bird in the coop and 10sq ft per bird in the run. That puts your coop at maximum capacity. And your run well under the max capacity of 30! But the amount of room in the coop is what's setting/limiting your capacity in this setup.
In this case, dominant white is not going to get you very far towards a solid white bird. Dominant white basically only affects black (and black based) pigment. It does not affect red. Recessive white will turn both black and red pigment white, so recessive white is a better option for this...
Once I did have a cockerel I was sure was dead revive upon throwing the body into a cold water bath to wait on us finishing the other birds we were dispatching
meow meow Monday, with a side of dog. Julius is getting so big! Had to be quick to get this shot, the cats make poor Zella nervous so she usually gets up pretty quick when one of them tries to cuddle with her.
Amara is still doing alright. She yells at us for food anytime we go in the kitchen...
Well, the closest hatching eggs from this year were about a half hour drive (one way). We made two trips that were 2 hours (again, one way) for hatching eggs and chicks. And we had one long weekend trip to pick up hatching eggs in another state. That was a six hour drive, but we kinda justified...
Agree with previous, they both look like females to me. Wyandotte tend to pink up pretty early.
The color differences are just how blue is. It's a highly variable color and can range from very pale grey to so dark it looks black.
I think the two on the left are boys. They both have more developed comb and wattles and the red on the wings is usually male specific coloration. The two on the right look like pullets with small pale combs and very little wattle development.
If no one's crowing yet, I would wait a little...
Who ordered snow?!
No one has set foot outside of the coop since we got snow last Saturday.
Rose is not impressed
I suspect the cold caused the water heater to stay on all night and the draw was enough to drain the batteries.
Lady Amalthea, Paprika, and Apollo look very cozy cuddled up next to each other tonight!
Caught another mouse last night. The electric trap is very effective. Unfortunately, I have tiny cannibals living in my garage. I'm finding about every other mouse we catch partially eaten :sick One the...
Fully feathered chickens usually handle single digit temps no problem as long as they have somewhere dry to get out of the wind. They're wearing down coats after all!
In all seriousness, feathers make for excellent insulation against the cold. The down traps warm air against the body and as...
Looks like mild frostbite to me. Generally the recommendation is to leave it alone. It's a small enough area that trying to treat it topically is likely to cause her more pain than the frostbite itself. Eventually that tip will self amputate, but it won't affect her health. I had to pullets last...
Great news! Lady Amalthea's bumblefoot is almost completely healed! Her right foot is completely healed, looks like nothing was ever wrong with it. And her left foot is nearly there too. When I changed the bandage tonight the scab seemed to be lifting so I went ahead and pulled it off...
