Is frostbite avoidable without electric heating? Should I add heat to my coop?

That alone will bring down the humidity. If you've got open waterers though, those I'd try to replace with nipple ones. We must have around 8 around here. Some are in heated coops, and some are store-bought electric ones.

Is frostbite avoidable without electric heating? Should I add heat to my coop?

$8 for 40# is cheaper than most anything. I would check around. Plus, they are cheaper in the long run because you don't need to change them but once a year or so.

Thats not bugs OR snow 🤧

We get them in a 40# bag at tractor supply. They're around $8 per bag. We put down a couple of inches and leave it alone for months if not a year. As long as they say 100% pine and they're horse bedding pellets, they should be the same thing.

Is frostbite avoidable without electric heating? Should I add heat to my coop?

I might have said this earlier, but I say it so often I forget where I was lol. Mold CAN start growing at 70% humidity. Horsebedding pellets, nipple waterers, no open water in the coops, exhaust fans, etc., are what we have to use. Those who say "more ventilation" doesn't work here, as the...

Thats not bugs OR snow 🤧

It probably is from the chickens. I'm thinking it might settle better into the pellets so it's not laying on top of the sand, but I wouldn't know that for a fact. I just know we have cameras in our pens and coops and we'll see a little bit of it but not to that extent.

Thats not bugs OR snow 🤧

We use horse bedding pellets year round. They keep the coop dry and odor-free as they absorb the moisture and dry out the poop. There is no dust, and when they get wet they turn to dustless, fluffy, sawdust. When it turns to about 80% sawdust, we change them out. That's about once a year in...

Do you mean 500 iu? That would have been okay. And eggs are one thing I suggested already for the selenium so you did fine!

Should I change out deep litter bedding before winter? Because it could cause too much moisture?

The sun isn't out when they're in the coop unless the weather hampers letting them out. Plus, generally, commercial feed contains all of the vitamins they need in a day.

Poop Board Design for New Hampshire Type Meat Birds - Recommendations?

How about a couple of these, set about 18" apart and a little lower, with your poop tray underneath of them?

Thank YOU for that compliment, but more so, thank you for all the help and advice you give to us BYC members! ❤️

    New here

Hiya, and welcome to BYC! :frow I'd try the link @N F C posted above, or your state/local poultry groups in FB. I just used Craigslist an hour ago too and got one reply already. We're glad you're here!

Need input - would this mix + Kalmbach work?

@2ndTink and I spoke though about upping things that silkies get because she's seen some wry neck in her chicks and I see some splayed legs in mine. Upping the E for one thing is more for them, but here she's looking for her large fowl breeders. Silkies as it is are prone to vitamin...

Need input - would this mix + Kalmbach work?

I had looked at this for my silkies, then changed my mind on switching from Kalmbach's Flock Maker, as the price is $2 higher for 20 fewer lbs. The only noticeable gain I noted was just 2% more protein. I would switch if I thought it was better for them in any other ways, but I don't. They...

    Behaviors of a rescued rooster

I've seen them on Etsy and Amazon so you could look how they make theirs and just try copy it somewhat. If all else fails, maybe you have a few facemasks around?

    Need help with Ai

Yes! Around 400 iu or so daily. I found just putting one of our own in their beak works best because they taste nasty otherwise. You could try cutting it into a small bowl of mash to see if he'd eat it though. He needs a little selenium too to absorb the E better, so some eggs or sunflower...

What do we think? Fisher bobcat or racoon?

Sounds like your coop is pretty predator-proofed! I'd consider getting an outdoor camera or trail cam so you could see what's coming around. We border a forest here, so the two dogs keep most of the riff-raff back, but they got to sleep too, so we have tons of solar motion lights around...

Epsom salt bath for a sick chicken

It sometimes helps with egg-bound hens because it relaxes them, or soaking their leg(s) if they are injured. It's not a good idea to give a bath to a sick chicken necessarily as it could stress her out and make things worse. What seems to be wrong with your hen?

More protein may help. If they aren't on an all-flock, I'd consider it as those are around 20% protein. You could also try treating him with a Vitamin E capsule once a day, and a little scrambled egg for the selenium. Fish would be good too for him/them.

Do all breeds of ducks dislike being picked up and carried around?

I have three different breeds of ducks, and none of them like being picked up. When one had a limping issue, I was so excited I got to hold her for a few minutes to check her feet. Almost all of the silkies on the other hand, I can walk up to in the yard and just pick them up. I've heard...
