Sometimes. Sparingly though, as in twice a week or so. A little kale or strawberries they like, in season. Kale is high in a lot of vitamins. Chickens can occasionally have a high level of vitamins/minerals; it's the long-term intake that can cause issues.
I don't recall ours having them. When they found an opening in the chicken wire around the garden a couple of summers ago, they mowed the kale down and picked at every tomato they could reach.
Hi Mickey,
Have they laid since you posted this? Your Barnevelders are like our silkies in that they take about 8 months, sometimes up to 10 months to lay eggs. It's frustrating for me as I'm anxious to breed sometimes.
I haven't been on your thread in ages, Fuzzi, so sorry about that.
Have you ever tried Kale? These silkies go nuts for it. You'd have to do your brick trick with it so they can rip hunks off the leaves. We've tied it in the coop too, but I like your brick idea better.
They sound very nutritious, but I'll pass. I'm very picky about what I give these silkies. Not enough, they can get vitamin deficiencies. Too much, and they or any chicken can OD on certain vitamins/minerals, or they don't excrete the excess and can end up sitting in their kidneys or liver...
You had done such a good job ensuring there wasn't a humidity loss. The wet paper towel is used to keep the membrane moist after someone opens the incubator and the membrane dries out, and the chick will have a harder time getting it open. But if there was no humidity loss, it's fine as it...
Hi,
It sounds like she might have gotten something stuck in her mouth and sneezing and could also explain that. Usually, chickens aren't bothered by a cat or dog hair, but perhaps something larger than that.
Has she stopped now?
If she hasn't, she might be coming down with a respiratory or...
Well, hey, at least you found a productive use for VetRX!
Glad her eye is better and that things are sounding better for you there. Those "growing pains" are frustrating for sure!
I never knew Healthy Harvest was made by Kalmbach so I learned something new today!
I'd love to get it local at Walmart, as we have to order Kalmbach's from Chewy.
I wouldn't switch to it though, as their all-flock is only 16%. Their chick starter sounds fine as is at 20%, but we give the...
Hi,
I know there are a lot with zombies, and also fibros. If you do a search on those you'll see tons of threads. I was looking for a thread specific to one or both, but don't see one. Here are three articles written about fibros. None have been written on zombies yet.
Hi,
Provided you're seeing movement, they should be okay. Expect a delay on hatching though, perhaps a half a day or maybe a bit more.
I would order a hygrometer/thermometer off of Amazon, Walmart, or wherever you can get one delivered. Many of us like the Govee brand and get those on Amazon.
I just googled it as we have no such thing around here, and it sounds like they're very nutritious. There were many sources attesting to it. Nothing our chickens in Wisconsin will ever have though. :)
I would just leave that one alone. It's got to be soon to be coming out. I have to commend you on the creativeness to do that though!
I'd give it a few more hours and see if it makes progress.
This article should help you decide when to break in. It's so hard when you're not really sure...
