egg just hatched - now what?!!

We've had a broody hen sitting on 5 eggs. Our first ever broody. While we were away this weekend one of them hatched. We took her/him inside since the barn is not suitable for a chick and put her in our brooder with chick starter, water and a 95 degree environment. The chick peeped a lot at...

    Silkie rooster recently becoming aggressive

Thanks. He IS a rooster being a rooster! A cute one at that. Is this a spring rooster thing or a forever thing? I've never had a rooster before so not sure if they get the spring crazies like horses do. I'll try the holding him down technique.

    Impaled chicken

It's a few months later and just wanted to update. We kept her inside for a few weeks - 3 I think. Once we introduced her back, the other chickens were aggressive with her. She still have limited movement due to her off balance. We removed her again during the day and added her in the...

    Silkie rooster recently becoming aggressive

Our sweet little puffball silkie rooster "Fern" (we thought she was a hen) has recently become aggressive. Admittedly he's a silkie and not very intimidating but still…it's not fun for the kids (or adults) to go tend to our animals and be pummeled by a rooster each time we walk into the barn...

    Impaled chicken

Thanks so much everyone. She is doing SO much better. The wing doesn't seem to be broken but perhaps a strained ligament. After a few days of wrapping the wing doesn't seem to hang as low. She is not falling over anymore for lack of balance. She has been inside for about a week. But now I have a...

    Re-introducing injured hen to flock

Last week I had to remove a hen because she hurt her wing. It had to be wrapped and she needed to be kept still while she recovered. I thought this might happen...when I tries to put her back in the barn today they all viscously attacked her. So much so that I had to remove her. I have heard...

    Impaled chicken

Yes, I could do. So you don't think that the injury could be permanent? I'm not sure what actually takes to break a wing.

    Impaled chicken

Yesterday afternoon I went to check on my animals and saw that one of my hens had impaled her wing on a hook that we use to hang water buckets. The hook is about 18 inches from the ground so she was able to stand but her wing was out stretched- stuck on this hook. It took quite some time and...

New run with hardware cloth or farm fencing?

Makes sense. Thanks - that's a LOT cheaper!

New run with hardware cloth or farm fencing?

Thanks suebee! Then why do hardware cloth on the bottom? Just curious.

New run with hardware cloth or farm fencing?

I've read many posts on here as well as scoured pictures on chicken runs. I need a new one. I've had ours for a few years and with all of our torrential rains and flooding it's lost it's integrity. Many of the posts I read have the hardware cloth on the bottom and then other fencing above...

Possum attack on my 12 week old pullets

It almost seems like once they find your girls they keep coming back. Maybe there's a predator party where they discuss the location of vunerable chicken coops. Ha ha!!

Possum attack on my 12 week old pullets

Oh my gosh - that is CRAZY!!! Predators are a way of life with chickens and it's terrible but it's so hard to protect them. I guess the first thing I would say is that you need to use hardware cloth instead of that larger field fencing that you have - so weasels and other smaller critters...

Is this coop big enough for 6 hens???

It looks like you should be fine. Chickens need about 12" of space to roost. They like to get pretty close to each other at night. If you're planning on letting them out of the run during their waking house I don't think it will be too small. I'm not sure where you live...if it's a cold...

    New Chick Behavior

She sounds adorable. I'm guessing you should just buy a chicken diaper and consider her a house pet.

    Screaming Silkie

We recently got 5 new pullets. During the day I keep them in a chicken coop close to the house. But because there's a hole in there that I have not yet secured (a weasel got in last winter), I bring them inside at night. I carry them out of the hen house in a cat carrier and keep them in my...

    Chicken butt - pictures

As I was going to see the chickens today I noticed something funny hanging between the legs of my hen. After I caught her I noticed that it was a ball of feathers and chicken poop. It fell off - belch. After a more careful inspection it looks like all the feathers have come of her rear end...

Our shells are pretty soft - what am I doing wrong?

Thanks....but I don't think so. They have shells that are hard. They just crack really easily. They are not deformed or weird in any way. The chickens live with out goats and sheep...not sure if that has anything to do with it. We had to move them to our animal barn because all the weasels...

Our shells are pretty soft - what am I doing wrong?

These are pretty new layers for us - I mean we've had them almost 9 months but they have just now really started laying regularly. The eggs are beautiful...well formed, bright yellow/orange but their shells are pretty soft. When I crack the eggs, they don't crack into a line but instead they...

Two roosters - will I have problems?

Thanks for the advice. I wasn't planning on having roosters - it's just the outcome of a a few chicks I picked up from a local chicken farmer. He warned me! I'm in the process of looking for some pullets or young laying hens to add to our flock. I love the idea of a hitching post that they...
