Yes. Yes I did. And yes, I'm selling as many eggs as I did at the farmers market, without killing my Saturday or spending $15 for the privilege.

I trust all you Tucson and Phoenix peeps survived the recent storms? It's all good for me in Cochise County. I'm supplying a local mom & pop grocery with eggs, so I'm moving as many as I did as a farmers market vendor, without standing around for four hours and dealing with customers (AKA...

    Austrolorp Hens and roosters

I loved my old BA roo "Karl" but had to rehome him because the flock was getting inbred. He has a new flock now, and no complaints. He was a bit "girl crazy" his first year, but mellowed into an awesome flock protector. Nice to the hens, and got along with the turkey tom and duck drake.

    Austrolorp Hens and roosters

I'm in southeast Arizona, and have raised Australorps since 2008. If the chicks hatch in early spring (March) the pullets will start laying around October - then drop off until February or so. Grown hens lay almost year-round, but slowing way down around the winter solstice (Dec 21), then back...

Oh cool! I just got 7 Jersey Giants and 8 Australorps yesterday myself!

Is the egg turner too large to fit? I would think it doable to drill a hold for the power cord and seal it up.

Animal abuse is wrong, but tough love is not. You're the "alpha hen" in the flock and the birds need to understand that.

    Australorp x Jersey Giant chicks?

I just added some Black Jersey Giant chicks to my admittedly non-show-quality Black Australorp flock. It should consist of a BA roo, 7 BJG hens, and 17-21 BA hens (depending on the male/female outcome of the 8 straight run chicks.) The folks in the Australorp thread think I'm nuts! :)

    Australorps breed Thread

Every chicken breed started as a "mutt", right?

Oh, and I did get some unrelated BA chicks toz for what it's worth.

    Australorps breed Thread

That's not dumb, it's a valid position and one I shared for many years, especially in regards to rabbits. Some reasons for crossbreeding include "hybrid vigor" where the Cornish Rock chick grows faster than its Cornish or Plymouth Rock parents, and the opportunity to make a custom flock with...

    Double post, sorry. :/ Bryan

    Australorps breed Thread

Howdy y'all! Wow, this thread has been active in the past two years since I posted! I was wondering if anyone has tried crossing BAs with Black Jersey Giants? I had to rehome my roo and stop breeding because my BA flock was getting inbred (bent toes and low hatch rates). As I'm not breeding...

    Arizona Chickens

I store hatching eggs in regular 18-egg cartons, unwashed, large side up, in a cool-ish location by the A/C vent. Then I elevate one side to about a 45 degree angle, which I understand keeps the yolks from touching the shells, then switch sides three times a day. Edit: I clean and disinfect...

    Arizona Chickens

I don't have ducks at the moment. I used to have Khaki Campbells, which were excellent layers (as advertised) and kinda spazzy (also as advertised). Before that I had Runners but a bobcat got to them before they matured, and Pekins as meat birds. Next duck project will be Welsh Harlequins...

    Arizona Chickens

Howdy y'all! Yes it's been two years since I hung out in here! I'm still doing well in Palominas (between Bisbee and Sierra Vista). I've either rehomed or freezer camped the rabbits, ducks, turkeys and redworms, leaving just chickens and Ottoman the tom turkey (watchdog). I travel a lot for...

    Considering going roosterless

In my experience, young roos are more girl-crazy than older ones. After two years, mine settled into the role of protector more than reproducer.

Hey Y'all! I'm still looking for an Australorp breeder in Tucson. I need a fresh unrelated roo for my increasingly inbred flock. Show-quality preferred, and I don't mind paying for quality. If you know of anyone, please pass on my email bryan@smiles-n-sunshine.com Thanks!!! Bryan Smith

Worm Wrangling is fun, too! Gallo has a PhD in Mealwormology and I've had some success as well, so holler if you have questions

Processing an overly cocky roo tomorrow

Good job! The carcass pic looks like one of mine, and I've been doing this for a few years now. I always skin our birds, because we cook with skinless meat anyway. You never really stop having "that feeling" when you slaughter an animal, but for me I keep my mind on the reward of a freezer...
