I dont usually stay outside for 24 hours unless its a real bad day at work, in which case i do cover up. I am just trying to learn and do whats best for them, seeing as i have multiple hens missing large areas of feathers and having temps downwards -10 for the next few nites, i don't want them...

We have a whole house generator, and I have backup lights in the event it goes out. My lo temp was 12 and high was 23 this morning, so its not getting overly heated.

I have a flock that is recovering from a mite infestation. Some of the birds have feather loss due to it. I have a heat lamp set on a timer to go on and off for an hour every couple of hours to take the chill out of the coop and protect those with feather loss from frostbite or hypothermia. Am i...

Thank you for sharing, im glad to see im not crazy for thinking of my hens as pets and keeping them around just for personality as they age. I get why the commercial folks do what they do... and id like to think that i can get a batch of broilers one day to raise just for meat birds without...

    Poultry nubee

Olive, the grey one in the photo, was killed sometime at night, or early morning, by i believe a owl, because she was not taken, as would have been the case with a 4 legged predator. The 4 pekin duck hens were definitely taken by coyotes at night, they were fine the night prior around 10pm. Both...

    Lost a hen tonight...

Thank you all for your input. This is why i made this post, not only to vent, but to learn. And, learning I am. I am skeptical about the poultry spray... that is why i bought the chemical dust as well. I am also thinking about painting the inside this spring as well, and caulking any joints...

    Poultry nubee

Thank you. I have lost 3 hens and my first 4 pekin hens. Its been a long and hard couple months of reality for me. My first hen I lost unexpectedly, found her in the bottom of the coop one morning. Chalked it up to old age, as I didnt know how old the hens I got from the neighbors were. Sucked...

Thank you for posting this. I havent had to cull, or euthanize a bird yet, but, since all of mine are "pets" at the moment, i imagine it is going to suck no matter which method i choose. It is one of the reasons i waited so long to get into farm animals... here's hoping for several more years...

thank you all for the replies. Even the one telling me to man up... sometimes you just need a gut punch to get your priorities straight! I am tender hearted, so each loss to me is a hit, especially since i put so much effort into trying to do this right. I am, however, quickly learning that...

    Poultry nubee

Hello all. I guess I should have posted an intro before i made my first post... i just had a lot to get off of my chest the other night after losing another hen. So, here is my bio: (1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens? We hatched our first 3 chickens from a dozen eggs...

    Lost a hen tonight...

Im new to the chicken business. I was given a dozen eggs to hatch from a friend of mine. Using my wifes antiquated, but proven homemade incubator, i got 3 chicks to hatch. We were raising them to possibly keep, as ive always wanted backyard chickens. I live on 3 acres of rural land, some...
