Thanks so much - yeah I know I left it too long to break the broodiness and will definitely stop it sooner next time! We have an end of our coop that can be closed off from the rest and the nesting boxes, so I just put her in there for 3 days/nights. Very relieved she’s just moulting though!
Hi all,
My 18 month old hen was recently broody for quite some time (maybe 7-8 weeks before we intervened). After we stopped her being broody, she’s started seriously losing her feathers. Her tail feathers are all gone, her face/head feathers are gone and now all the feathers on the back of her...
Hi (again!),
I have a 5 day old rescue chick, who has been wobbly from when we got her (at a day old). She is still not standing to full height at all, and “walks” or scootches on her hocks the entire time. She often tips backwards and sits down fully to to eat. She hasn’t grown nearly as much...
Unfortunately the chick seems a bit worse, on its hocks the whole time including when it’s eating. I’ve read it’s possibly a vitamin b deficiency, so I’ve crushed up a vitamin b tablet and mixed it with water and and syringed it into its mouth. Any other advice appreciated!
Soo cute! Yeah I think mine just needs to regain her strength. She was rescued from a flock where she was left behind by the others because she couldn’t keep up, so I guess she’s still just regaining her strength. Thanks x
Hi, I have a couple 3-4 day old chicks. One of them has been rocking back on its legs and sitting/falling on its butt since we got it (at a day old). It seems to walk ok, although mostly just wants to sit under the eco glow all day. Eating and drinking fine. Pic attached, any advice appreciated...
Hi all, we rescued these young chicks (we already have chickens so it wasn’t foreign to us!), however I’m wondering if anyone can give me an educated guess on their genders? They’re about 2 days old, photos of their wing feathers attached. Thanks!
Hi all, I’ve just rescued a brand new chick from down our road, where it’s been left behind by its mother and siblings. It seems ok. I raised 2 chicks last year in a brooder, however they were a bit older when we got them and also had each other for company/warmth. I’m just after a couple...
Thanks! My concern (having never had chickens previously) is whether they’ll be ok - especially weather wise. The coldest we’d get up here over winter would be maybe 6 degrees Celsius overnight on a rare occasion.
Thanks! My husband built it and was very proud of himself! I might get him to take the high perch out of the run and see if that makes a difference. I am happy to continue to put and then shut them in the hen house overnight rather than expect them to go in themselves - would they go in of their...
Here are some pics - the hen house is the wooden bit at the end of the run. There’s also a photo of the high perch in the run where they prefer to sleep!
I don’t have a pic of the whole setup! I’ll take one shortly. Yep the perch in the run is pretty high - it couldn’t be that high in the coop as the coop is in a lower part of the run. There is good ventilation in the coop as the tops of the walls are open/mesh.
Thanks - yeah the entire run is covered. So very rain proof! I suppose if it was extremely windy they’d get hit with that, but surely they’d opt to go into the hen house in that case?!
I’ve got 2x 9 week old pullets (fully feathered and pretty big already!) and one 6 month old hen. The hen has always preferred to sleep in the secure run, rather than the hen house. Over the summer I figured she was cooler outside. I had been shutting the pullets in the hen house at night, but...
