    Breed?

My friend in PA had this hen given to her today. Any idea on breed? Previous owner says it lays 1 white egg every other day.

    Weird eggs

29 weeks old. I did not want a production breed but the lot at the feed store was a brown egg mix and we thought this one was a different breed. We have her plus a cuckoo marans, a buckeye, and an Australorp. The golden buff is the only one with issues, like she gets fixated on something and does...

    Weird eggs

Never any like this before. No supplemental light. They don’t look or sound sick. They seemed relaxed today, except for her but she is always high strung, even as a chick. They were 29 weeks yesterday and 3 are laying (buckeye seems to have zero interest in laying). Maybe something tried to get...

    Weird eggs

We think we got 2 eggs from one chicken today, both weird! The first was a white ringed egg and the second was a larger slab sided egg, it was thin shelled and lighter in color than usual. I looked for causation on the article posted on this site, but we haven’t seen her sneezing and are not...

Frantic chicken behavior but not sitting on egg(s)

So, I didn’t get home until late so I didn’t get a video today, but my daughter said the Australorp (newest layer, only her third egg) didn’t lay until late afternoon, and when my daughter went to get it, the frantic chicken was upstairs pecking that egg!! She didn’t manage to break it at all...

Frantic chicken behavior but not sitting on egg(s)

No, it’s not that, my other 2 layers do the egg song. But the sex-link does not at all! She’ll lay super fast, hop to the lower level to eat, then start her bar to nest boxes dance. I’ll try to go out this afternoon and get a video! Thanks!

Frantic chicken behavior but not sitting on egg(s)

Thank you, she is my early layer each day, so the behavior is post-lay. She’s always been the alarm chicken, and kind of frantic in general. But the constant searching and jumping from nesting area to the roost bar outside of it is new. She even sounds frantic with high pitched repetitive...

Frantic chicken behavior but not sitting on egg(s)

Ahh, thank you. She is our only sex-link, and also the only one to have seemed “neurotic” on occasion. Earlier, we switched from chick feed to an organic grower feed, and within 24 hours she started pecking and aggressively pulling feathers on other chickens. We tried everything before changing...

Frantic chicken behavior but not sitting on egg(s)

Hello, I have 4 chickens, 26 weeks old, and 3 of the 4 are laying. One of them, the golden buff hybrid who was first to lay, has recently begun constantly jumping into and out of the nesting area, acting frantic, but she has no problem with us taking her egg each day and does come down to eat or...

Do you consider your Chickens Pets or Livestock

Our 4 are definitely pets. However, I, my mom, aunts, and rest of the family grew up with them as livestock and my mom, at least, thinks we are nuts pampering and carrying on over chickens. I do keep trying to tell my children and spouse that they are chickens, and have many predators, things...

First to lay is pecking others?

Well, I didn’t mean to get a sex-link chicken. I know they don’t live as long due to high egg production. But we got our chicks during the lockdown, and apparently everyone was getting chickens, and the only chicks the Feed and Seed could get were a brown egg layer mix. There was a lot of...

First to lay is pecking others?

They do need more room and we stained the extension today. We currently move them back and forth between 2 areas that gives them about 35 square feet, but I know the more space, the happier. We also noticed that the feather picker really, really loves to forage, so we’re giving them fresh forage...

First to lay is pecking others?

Well, I don’t know if the pecking order actually changed, but she definitely has more attitude now. She’s always been greedy and pushing her way first to any treat or food. But the head bird has always been the Australorp and she seems to still be 🤷🏻‍♀️ She is actually very calm and acts like a...

First to lay is pecking others?

Thank you. We wondered if the hormones might make her more on edge. About a week before she laid the first egg, she started pacing and seeming uptight.

First to lay is pecking others?

We have 4 pullets, 19 weeks old. The golden buff (type of red sex-link) started laying 3 days ago and is now pecking 2 of the others, the #1 and #4 chickens, and pulling out feathers! She does not bother #3, but that one is a buckeye and does not put up with it. Is the new layer trying to buck...

Is this a red sex-link pullet?

Thanks, good to know! So will they lose their current feathers again before getting adult plumage? Because I’m seeing a few black feathers in the pen, but neither the Marans nor the Australorp have any bald spots.

Is this a red sex-link pullet?

Thank you. Whew! We can’t have Roos within city limits. No idea why her tail is curly. I guess with a mixed breed, you never know what traits you’ll get. I think Meyer says the golden buff is RIR and white leghorn.

Is this a red sex-link pullet?

We got this chick in a batch of mixed breed brown Eggers that came to our local feed and seed from Meyer. Supposed to be a pullet. Is it a red sex-link, which they call golden buff? And I’m concerned about whether it’s really a pullet, although I think Meyer says 100% correct sexing...it’s tail...
