Yes it’s probably too small. The new girls seem to want to roost outside the hen house, but they choose to sit on a shelf despite the roost that is in there. Plus, they wouldn’t be totally safe from predators but so far so good.
I didn’t ask about winter warmth and ventilation, but I appreciate...
If you do use the stall for hay, given that it has flooded, and that I suspect weather will get worse not better over time (in general), I would encourage you to build a double pallet floor before putting hay in there. That would give you an extra 7-8" of lift off the floor should there be some...
Is the orange coop the one you are wanting 4 birds in? It is probably too small.
But as they are in a larger building, I would just put in a roost in that space. Often times people have misconceptions about keeping chickens warm. Thinking they have to huddle together in a small space to keep...
Sure! If you like I can send the video of it as well. I couldn’t believe it when it scampered up that small wire. They would be cool animals if they didn’t also steal, destroy, infect etc.
Will do! We will likely be patronizing your business again to get a feeder for the second coop once the...
Thank you so much! I got a real kick out of reading yours as well. Just today I was doing some pythagorean math for another project and realized that for the coop I'd been using the formula wrong :barnie
I would love to see what you end up doing for the siding! On that topic I will note that...
Yeah I started putting them in around 3-4 weeks old but I always had to remove the runt because she was in a predator mode. But the chick as well was doing it so it became a hassle so I mainly did it once a week for a couple hours. I'm finding chicks to be quite hardier than people say they are...
Thank you. I will have to get the materials to block the boxes. I know how I can block them. I'd be ecstatic if she'd get the hint from just being placed on the roost. Lol
I am going to engage in chicken math. I have arranged to get a couple of pallets that are just starting to lay from a...
I have seen rat & mice tunnels inside of my roosters coop and rat nest on top of the coop .. twice, I have seen chicken feed inside the rat nest too, lol.
Since the farm is unmanned a couple of days at a time, those animals have plenty of time to find ways to steal the food.
The rooster coop...
My apron comes out about 2 ft and is pinned to the ground with landscape staples .It has a row of cinder blocks along the edges to make it look like a flower bed and it helps hold it all down. Any diggers get discouraged quickly. I wish I'd used PVC to coat it but 16 gauge is expensive .My coop...
Don't!
Design and build your own. Make sure it is big enough that you can stand erect inside it. Chickens do a whole lot better with more than the minimum amount of room.
If you need materials, most everywhere has a source for free pallets.
I had considered using Black Jack #57 rubber coating when I first built my chicken coop. Lots of good reviews from other members here on the BYC forums. But the rubber coating was rather expensive compared to the linoleum I got on clearance.
I don't have another structure to house my...
Thanks for the response. I agree with your comments. As much as I like my elevated chicken coop built on an old boat trailer, I have never moved it like I thought I would. Being stationary, and looking back 20/20, I think I would have been better off with a shed conversion chicken coop with a...
I have no chickens….I could maybe try to dress one of the geese up as a chicken. I don’t think the quail would tolerate it and the ducks might think it’s a disguise to rob a bank or something.

Looks good and cost effective. OSB is tends to swell and deteriorate when wet. Plywood is somewhat better. Boards are better yet.
My coops have dirt floors with deep litter.
Well, I blocked off access to the Pullet Palace and Belle decided to revert to Bush Chicken mode, laying her egg in the grove of trees in the barn pasture. Of course, the egg was discovered, cracked open, and eaten by some critter, or worse, one of her flockmates.🙁
I've abandoned the idea of...
:idunno Pallet Wood Flooring for Chicken Coop
When I first built my elevated chicken coop, I used OSB for the floor board and covered it with linoleum I got on clearance from Menards. It lasted 5 years, so I'm not complaining. But the other day I started my semi-annual coop cleanout and...
