I'll never get another Rhode Island Red due to a vicious bully hen, who was also a hard to break compulsive broody. (And reading numerous negative reports of others' RIR's)
I hope you all will consider entering BYC's Halloween Egg decorating contest!!!! They need entries!

Yes, I've had Wyandottes, they take a break in the winter as well. There are production breeds that will lay all winter, but they don't live as long....
Roosters don't just crow in the morning. You know that, right? You've had roosters before to compare to? Ours pretty much crow all day and half the night, and I never considered them abnormal....
She has weaned her chicks! Mine usually wean theirs by 6 weeks! They're on their own...

Roosters do crow all day and often during the night. All the ones I've ever had do. Not sure if what you consider excessive may be completely normal....
There is a heated nipple waterer available. I've used this one for the past 2 years. It will stay unfrozen in below zero temps.
I put it away after winter and get out the non heated ones.
I prefer nipple waterers for new chicks. They pick it up really fast. Just keep tapping on the nipples. Once one learns it the others will follow...
And you won't have to deal with dirty water at all!
