Thankyou, I am doing this only because they are molting other then that I do not heat at all and then even molting it has to be in the teens or below for me to turn it on. When I place my hand in there in the morning it hardly feels warm at all so I am really OK but thanks for your input.
Let...
Well it has been over a week using my heat pad since my 2 RIR started molting and was almost bald. I shut the heat pad during the day and was plugging it back in at night and the girls were happy. They are now growing their feathers back and I have not turned the heat pad on in 3 days but...
I normally do not heat my coop but
1. both my girls are molting very bad hardly any feathers were left on their bodies
2. The weather is 7 degrees for the next 4 days
I have used my seedling heat pads before with no problems and last night I noticed both girls were sitting on the heat pad...
I used a smaller one last year and it only went on when the temp went below freezing so since I already have their water on this thermostate I added a seedling heat pad and placed it in the coop with newspaper on top and then hay on top of the newspaper. It does not get hot just warm - I use...
I just took these pictures 30 min ago. This is the worst she has looked in almost 3 yrs. Not laying eggs for 2 weeks, lost her sister 2 weeks ago to a possum, she is not eating well and is walking backwards so I am sure there is alot of stress.
This is doodles and she is a Rhode Island Red...
They already are getting scratch grain plus another dish with organic feed plus I give them corn but they wont eat the corn, I give them bread and they wont eat bread, banana but they won't eat banana...very fussy eaters.
They are RIR (Rhode Island Reds) I did go to the Royal King and picked up some hanging treats, meal worms, vitamins for water, electrolyte, life-lytes mega tab vit/supplement for poultry. Maybe I am going overboard but I have 2 water bowls one with the vitamins and other plain. I have never...
Today was the first time I have ever seen my chicken walk backwards - she is molting very bad for the first time in 2 years and I am worried. What can I do?

Over a week ago I found one of my girls half eaten on the bottom of my coop - which I leave the door open so the girls could go in and out when they want (free range) I have a 6' fence all around my yard and for 2 years it has been without any issues. This summer I trapped 7 possums and never...
Found out what the problem was. After they molted my hen (piper) took over the roll of leader and she is pecking on Doodles so Now I take doodles from top the hay stack and put her in the coop and lock the door. Did this for 2 nights and all is back to normal and I even got an egg!
I am having the same issue. I have 3 RIR that are now 22 months old. About 8 weeks ago 1 of my girls (that I even noticed could be longer) was not going in the coop. During this time they were also molting Nov/Dec and looked so bad! My girls free range and go in the coop when they want to go...
I too have a 1 1/2 yr old molting real bad - never seen any of my RIR look so bad I have 3 girls and I had 2 of my girls molt last month but not bad. Piper is going thru a tough time always letting the others eat treat before she does sitting behind the scene all the time. I am giving them...
I have 3 RIR that are 1 1/2 yr old. They make loud noises when they lay an egg (this is my cue to go out and get the egg and reward with a treat) - BIG Mistake! Now they make loud noises just to get a treat so I have to slowly stop this habit.
They also want to lay in the same nest box so...
