I think maybe it is some sort of a sprain...she is almost three years old, I've checked her foot several times looking for bumblefoot...there's no sign of any cuts or swelling. No leg mites or obvious injury..
hey guys! One of my hens has been limping on her right leg for about a month now...I've examined her foot and her leg and can't figure out what is hurting her, any thoughts? Treatment? Thanks!

It's such a tough call to make I know! The vet I saw today was really nice, he explained a lot and basically told me there are things to help prolong the inevitable if it's caught early each time but the genetics of a hen that has issues like Gigi or penny ultimately can't be fixed. For me...
I took Gigi to an avian vet this morning....unfortunately despite all my efforts she was full of fluids and positively diagnosed with egg yolk peritonitis. In so much obvious pain, we decided it was the most humane thing to put her down and so that's what we did. I feel so terrible that I...
Thank you so much...I found a local avian vet and took her this morning. She was too sick and I had to put her down. I'm so glad your girl made it through....I am devistated
I found a local avian vet!
Gigi has an appointment tomorrow at 11:00am, I'll post diagnosis and treatment, she's not improving and the receptionist said it's doubtful penicillin is helping.
My vet can't see her til Wednesday but he said he'd take a look...not sure what route he'll go. I gave her more penecillin this morning and also a little nutri drench. She ate a little worms, little water. Her breathing is worse like a little whistle when she breathes...if she has a respiratory...
I have a call into my vet, I'm reading baytril is effective and also can stop them from laying after treatment. My girl is not doing well this morning...still trying to get the penecillin in her in the meantime.
Thank you! I dissolved a 250 mg pill in 4cc of water and then drew 1cc in syringe and put in on a small piece of bread...she wanted no part of it. Not eating much, so I tried my best to syringe 1cc in her beak. She got some but was not happy. Not even interested in scrambled eggs at this point...
It's called "fishpen" 250mg tabs I'm reading 125 mg is good for chickens is this correct? The bottle says it's a bactericidal for gram positive and some gram negative bacteria and is dissolved in water
Should I try an antibiotic or penicillin in case she already has an infection brewing? Everything I've read about peritonitis is so grim I'm not sure what to do, however it's been four days so I know she's not egg bound. I'm pretty sure it's a soft egg or already broken egg in there, and yes...
Thank you for this info! One of my hens is exactly the same as yours...her eggs have been huge since she began laying and she is tiny I've always felt horrible for her. She's looked lethargic a few times and always passed a broken egg or shriveled up shell rock hard, or soft shell. She hasn't...
I think you may be right...I actually sucked it up and put a glove on and checked to see if I could feel anything and there's nothing that I can feel. But after I felt around some yellowish egg yolk came out with some other goo leading me to believe the egg has broken in there.
