Definitely she has been making some bad decisions.
Today she spent 7 hours outside foraging in the deep undergrowth. Then suddenly she remembered she was broody and shot back to the nest.
This is after sitting for 23 days on nothing!
Thanks. I figured that was probably the case but you know I do worry!
Otherwise she seems aggressively healthy. Her feathers are shiny and she is charging around in the undergrowth catching bugs. She is so far in I can’t see her even though I am sitting in the chicken yard - but I can hear...
I have let Tassels out on a trial release. So far so good. But she is still making broody noises and flaring up.
But she hasn’t gone back to the nest for several hours and she is running around in the Goldenrod and Artemesia forests.
I had forgotten that she is quite bold towards me. She...

A product called Tecnu can get it off your skin if you wash with it immediately. It probably works for chickens too - but I think maybe too much time has passed.
Worth keeping a bottle of Tecnu...
One suggestion on the crate is to put a length of 2x4 wood in there for her to stand on.
It is not wide enough to nest on, but it means their feet are not on the wire.
That is what I did for Tassels - I copied it from someone on BYC - and she marches up and down on it yelling curse words at me.
The vet I take chickens to is an exotic animal vet. It basically means she is comfortable with a range of species. She also happens to keep chickens but is in no way a chicken expert.
Happy Friday everyone. I struggling to get fluffy butt shots - best I have managed so far today.
Tassels is still in jail and doing her best to persuade me she is done with being broody. ‘Honestly Mom, I have seen the error of my ways. You should let me out of jail so I can prove that going...
I am not sure about there not being any backyard chickens laying 300 eggs.
If you look at US hatchery websites they usually give a rough estimate of eggs per year for each breed. Many of those are in the 250-300 range (eg ISA Browns, production RIRs).
Although I don’t source chicks from these...
