As for frost bite I find it helps if you use vaseline on combs.waddles and feet about every 2 weeks. Keeps the moisture from attaching to them when they drink.

Both lay but not like chickens that are breed as prolific layers. Silkies are the best broodies hands down. A silkiie will set on any other chickens eggs,hatch them out and mother them.
IM getting the silkies mainly as pets and will use them to hatch some eggs now and then.
