Oh yeah, for you ladies digging the light purple paint, it’s called Peace and Happiness. It’s the color we painted our daughter’s room 17 years ago when we moved in this house. The paint was still good. Leftover, free is always best!

I see people using them but very limited. Call me crazy, but I think the bees like the wood better.

If it works out good, I want to eventually have all longhives. Realistically, I will probably always have something going in the traditional Langstroth setup too. Can’t have good equipment just setting around, right? Right now the longhive is empty. I plan to put 1 of these existing colonies in...

I have been commenting on The Honey Factory thread, but trying to keep my bloggish stuff here. It gets confusing. I got the longhive painted and moved with the help of my lovely wife. The whole point is to switch to all longhives eventually. I was going to switch when they capped the honey but...

    The Honey Factory

I recently did a little research on staghorn sumac. I know, it’s one of the age old debates about planting for the bees, but “you know the bees travel like 3 miles away to get what they need.” Staghorn would be blooming now if we had it. Right now is the Chinese Talo flow for us. I was thinking...

I think around 31-ish. The first time I did the math it was 29 but I used the wrong measurement.

All it needs is paint and bees! The entrances are on the hinge side so you can work bees without disturbing the flow. Mistakes were made but it will work great just the same. I learned a lot building that tank!

I have some incentive to get this long hive finished. It’s been 2 weeks since I checked my supers. Just a reminder, one hive had zero comb drawn and the other had trace amounts on 1 frame. Today both hives have at least 8 frames full of capped and uncapped honey. I don’t have anymore supers...

If they don’t like the surface they will build out from the actual foundation. I have been told some of these companies use inferior wax on the foundation therefore creating the opposite effect. Paraffin and other ingredients they use to make the wax go further, make the bees angry. They take it...

Still got a ways to go but it’s a good start. I put those frames in for effect 😁.

    The Moonshiner's Chick Chat

Hey everyone. I still have chickens. My RIR auto sexing project is pretty much complete. This last batch I hatched, there was never a doubt about how many pullets and cockerels I had. I just got one problem. I have lots more cockerels than pullets! 😭 I pulled eggs from 3 different groups and...

I better get busy. My projects tend to drag out. As far as my 2 hives go, the deep brood boxes are packed with brood and honey but they have just begun to draw comb in one of the supers. One had an excluder and the other didn’t. The one that didn’t had just the smallest amount of comb started...

Will do! There’s lots of YT guys that have videos on using long hives. Most in the south. Kamon Reynolds did an entire series on it a few years back. They build between floor joists going horizontal and have thriving colonies. I figure this is no different, right?

One thing is for certain. If you don’t like it, you can switch back to traditional Langstroth. Otherwise, I wouldn’t be taking the risk. When you say the earlier in the year the better, would you not attempt it at all this year? I’m totally cool with waiting until next year if that’s what will...

I started building a long Langstroth hive today. I’m using some scrap wood so it’s not as it would be if I were going to Lowe’s to buy new lumber. I’m edge gluing 2x6s for the sides instead of using a 2x12. It should be a fun project. I love woodworking and have gotten out of it over the years...
