I hope you noticed that it was a pack of 10 inserts for $134.00, not just one bucket setup. So, that would cost you about $14.00 per bucket insert.
I bought some items from the Dollar Tree to make my equivalent of those bucket inserts. After over 30 minutes of cutting and drilling, I was not...
Thanks. I think they will be safe.
I hope to make my grow buckets with as much free and/or salvaged materials as possible. I think I could get the cost down to almost nothing.
Having said that, if you value your time and you don't want to spend it looking around for things that might work...
Thanks for the response. I understand the use of metal pipes for well water. I have well water on my property. I cannot imagine that thin aluminum pipe would ever be used to supply potable water because it would not hold up over time. However, I am just considering using the aluminum pipes as...
:fl I only wish I had an outside greenhouse. Maybe someday.
I liked your idea of using cottage cheese cartons as starter pots - if I had the room inside my house. But I just don't have that much room inside my house to have those large pots. I had maybe 50 of those 3-inch net pots on my starter...
For some reason, this thread showed up on my notifications. I am curious now to hear how you worked out your indoor brooder.
FWIW, I live in northern Minnesota. It is freezing out in my unheated garage when I buy my chicks. I have two heat lamps on the brooder at all times, with a remote...
That seems like a great way to reuse those plastic cartons for a few times before they get sent to the recycle center. I love doing stuff like that.
On your cottage cheese cartons, for example, are you limited to top watering the plants or are you able to bottom water them and have the water...
Years ago, I had a problem with a neighbor's dog(s) digging around my pepper and tomato plants. I found if I put a simple wire tomato cage around the plants the dog(s) would not dig there.
I am generally not a big fan of those wire tomato cages, but I had a lot of them passed on to me from my...
:caf I, too, had consider laying down wire on the top of the soil to preventing the squirrels from digging in the garden beds. But I ended up rejecting that idea for a number of reasons. 1) It would not stop any birds or squirrels from digging between the wires, so they might still find and eat...
@Smokerbill, I agree with @TooCheep on this point. I had all kinds of mold growing on my paper roll and toilet paper roll plant starting pots. It did not work for me. But I have heard other people that have had success with paper rolls. I did not.
I have had great success using plastic 3-inch...
You can make a square starter pot out of any round form. Check this out...
All you need to do is flatten the round tube, then fold it in half again. That gives you 4 equal sides. Cut the bottom tabs and fold them in. Now you have a perfect square pot.
:idunno Yeah, it's been a really tough year for us with the squirrels. I checked my peppers and tomatoes this morning when I fed and let the chickens out of the coop. Found another 3 plants dug out and tossed to the side.
On the positive side, the pallet wood frames with chicken wire are doing...
Thanks for the feedback. I'll have to look online for more info. I would prefer to use those metal pipes as fill tubes if safe. In any case, I might have some free fill tubes to go with the free buckets I get from Harbor Freight. That continues to bring down the price of a grow bucket build.
I chipped up some small branches yesterday with my little electric Sun Joe CJ602E woodchipper. That woodchipper is really only good for small yard cleanups. You can chip up branches about 1-1/2 inches round max. But what it is designed for, it works pretty well.
I used the wood chips I made...
⚠️ Adding 3-year-old Leaf Mold Compost to my Hügelkultur Beds
This week, I was busy cleaning up a large pile of 3-year-old leaves that I had stashed in a large bin. After all that time, the leaves had broken down a lot. I have read that leaf mold compost is one of the best sources of compost...

⚠️ Update on Extensions for Plant Protective Covers
:tongue I mentioned weeks ago that we are fighting a real problem with squirrels this year. They are getting into just about all our planters and raised beds, digging around, eating seeds, and pulling out the young plants leaving them to die...
Speaking of tall fill tubes, I recently salvaged some metal pipes that I think might make great tall fill tubes like in your pictures. Most of them are about 52 inches long, and they are 1-1/2 inch in diameter. Here is a quick picture of them...
My only concern is if it is safe to use metal...
:lau I have three acres of lawn/wooded property, so I only mow on days ending in "y"! Mostly I toss the grass clippings into the chicken run. However, every once in a while, I will use some grass clippings as mulch on my raised beds.
I use grass clippings and/or wood chips. Works pretty good for me and I don't have buy anything. I probably prefer the grass clippings as they can just be cultivated back into the soil at the end of the season. You don't want to mix the wood chips into your growing soil.
I get some weeds from...
If I was a better gardener, I could probably just stick my finger in the dirt and know if it was time to water, or not. However, the reason I got started into sub-irrigated planters was that I am not so good at "old-fashioned" methods of gardening. In any case, the water reservoir method just...
