Found during the day, with a flashlight. Doesn’t move/crawl away when we touch it. Their leg scales aren’t raised, they eat and drink normally and lay eggs.
The hens are in an enclosed run, and no access to chickens from other flocks, or birds.
Mine actually all started losing feathers like her. Looks like they’re working on growing them back, though. Haven’t quite figured out what happened but it looks like a molt.
Mites, feather pecking or a molt?
5 out of 6 hens are losing feathes on their necks, heads, backends or stomachs.
Their skin looks clean and mite-free under their feathers, they’re about a year old and we don’t have a rooster. All are laying semi-regularly, one lays soft eggs frequently. We...
I guess this would fall under behavior? How many of you have hens that have grown spurs? My Easter Egger girl is a year old, very docile, friendly girl and lays green eggs…many of them soft shell. She’s been growing some big spurs compared to the rest of her siblings.
My hens have constant access to oyster shells, high quality Kalmbach feed, and only a small amount of treats, like soldier fly larvae or veggie scraps. They even have calcium deposits on some of their eggs…so why are their eggshells brittle and cracking easily?
Hens are 12 months old btw.
She’s about a year. Laid fine in the past. As of typing this, she just laid the egg and it seemed perfectly fine. She’s now gracing me with her egg song…lol. Sorry for the false alarm.
Actually just noticed that the fifth hen is starting to show baldness, too, so 5 out of 6. The 6th girl, a Buff Orpington, is fully feathered with a nice thick coat. She’s super docile and calm.
All the girls in the picture are dealing with it, so four out of six. I have six hens total, no rooster. They have about a 20ft long run, and constant access to outside. Also a swing and lots of leaves to dig through. I’m feeding them Kalmbach Pellets 17% protein, with full access to oyster...
What’s going on with my girls? All super active and clean, zero signs of mites. Full access to oyster shells and high quality, Kalmbach feed. Are they just molting?
They are about 12 months old now, and no rooster.
Is this just a molt? We have no roosters, all the girls are in a very large, enclosed space. Super clean coop and feathers, no signs of mites or bugs. They’re about 12 months old. Cold and rainy here in the Northeast.
Hi! I don’t think this is necessarily an injury, but I’m not sure. Her neck has been bald for a couple of months now. No signs of mites or any other infestation, all of the hens get along super well and I don’t have any roosters. Is she just going through a molt? My Easter Egger also had the...
I put old leaves from the ground all around my property in the chicken run. These girls are THRILLED. They’ve been foraging through this all day.
This is safe, right? They don’t leave their huge run, and I just realized that I may have disturbed the bacteria/biodiversity that they’re used to. I...
My girl got a very, very slight scrape on her foot. Just enough to peel back some skin. I cleaned it with soap, water and peroxide, treated it with Neosporin and wrapped it with what I had on hand.
How long should it stay wrapped? It’s not much more than a paper cut.
My little Ginny was eating corn off of a big snack cube that my mom put in our run, and she got a small crack on the tip of her beak. Anything I can/should do?
Did I make a mistake? I had to rehome two accidental roosters, and was given a hen that is the same age as my flock of 5 girls.
I had her in a dog cage against the main run, and they seemed interested but weren’t acting up. She was terrified and trying to get in with them, slamming herself...
