We use horse bedding pellets so I don't know what they smell like unless they poop on me when I'm holding them. I've never noticed they smelled fishy though.
I'd be doing what you're doing with probiotics for the diarrhea.
5-day-olds only because it was 80's the last two days and they get to be in half sun/half shade. The sooner you can get them out, the faster they build up immunities and resistances.
We use a verticle nipple bottle. You can take a piece of wire or wire coat hanger, wrap it around the top...
I'd say you're right but that's us looking at one picture of an egg, so what I'd do is put an X on that one, put it back in the incubator, and check it in 1 week. If it's dead, it'll look similar to what you're looking at now. If not, you'll see a lot of veins.
I wound up getting some laced silkies from hatching eggs from a breeder. I got eggs from her cuckoo pen and mottled pen, so for the first one here, she said he would be from the cuckoo pen but he's not a cuckoo.
The second one from the mottled pen, but he's not mottled and I'm...
Yes, mom should take them back. I wouldn't give the egg though as then you'll have to get them some grit. I'd stick with water and starter for their first few weeks if she doesn't take them.
It's not unusual for new moms to step on and kill a chick, sad though.
That's normal. I'm not sure if all duck eggs do that but when I hatched some pekins for my neighbor, they got that darkness on them too.
Ducks take longer than chickens to hatch so hang in there.
Hiya, and welcome to BYC! :frow Pretty chick!!
Naked necks (showgirl silkies) have even bigger butts. They stick out like that but even more, and don't get feathers back there. Sort of hideous actually until feathers start growing.
