Small update;
I moved a waterer into the coop just so the ducklings can have easier access while my hen is still in the nesting stage.
I checked on the ducklings and chicks, 1 of the chicks (the black sex link) was stolen by my other broody hen, the buff Orpington. But everyone is still doing...
So a few weeks ago, two of my hens went broody. I don’t have any fertile eggs to give them, haven’t had a rooster in about a year now.
So I picked up some young birds (<5 day old, small babies with as few feathers as I can find) from my local feed store.
From the limited selection in the...
Long time no update
Mimic is almost 9 months now. She’s laying eggs, since I get two green eggs a day now, I assume one is my olive egger and the other is her.
This morning a video showed up on my social media feed of a little dog stealing eggs from the coop.
The comments on it were absolutely wild saying how the dog should be shot, that the dog will escalate to killing the birds, etc.
And like- seriously? That’s a bit of an overreaction right? Not...
It’s been a bit since my last update.
Mimic is now 16 weeks old today. She’s doing great, enjoying some pumpkin and raiding the apple orchard with her buddies.
No eggs yet, I suspect we’ll likely have to wait till spring as I don’t supplement light for my birds, it gets dark early and stays...
Hmm, might slows down from every week updates soon. Not sure how needed it is now that Easter egger seems to be the most likely scenario.
But here she is. Pictures are actually from yesterday as I’m traveling this week, but she’s been moved outside. She’s not the biggest fan of it yet though.
Week 7
I’m about 70% sure she’s a pullet, but we’ll see. Harder to tell when breed variation differs so much.
Hopefully they’ll move outside sometime over the next week. My current set isn’t big enough to accommodate the four newbies, and I broke my secondary (…and third) coop I was going to...
Ooo, promising lead. Those tail feathers (example from Hoover’s hatchery) sure look similar.
Fingers crossed Mimic is a hen so I can someday see what color eggs she lays.
Thursday! Estimated age is now 1 week.
Not a lot of changes given it’s only been a few days. I’ve noticed some new wing feathers around the base of the wing, they’re a soft brown color.
Day 2;
The chick has been named Mimic
Her pals are a few pullets I picked up to raise along with her, the Plymouth and olive egger being the same age, the Brahma being a week or so older.
They’re all settling in well, quite content little pals even with the cats being nosy. Since she arrived...
Hmm
Not the best at identifying combs (+have left work now bye chicky, I’ll see if he’s still there tomorrow)
Easter egger or Americana (ameraucana cross) were my first thoughts. So maybe.
