Hello, I am nosing around the ideas of running some meat birds! We currently have 18 egg layer chickens (1 probably rooster) that we got Mar 2 so no eggs yet. Trying to get some ideas or suggestions for space/feed and speed of production ready/ease of raising comparisons between more chickens...
We currently have:
SL Wyandotte
Barred Rock
Blue Rock
Olive Egger
Pearl Star
Amberlink
We do believe one of the Amberlink is most certainly a roo.
I would imagine eating most of them as quick as possible but would like a few for breeding to replenish stock. A good reason I was leaning quail...
Have you had any experience with quail? I am trying to weigh the space for meat chickens (plus more feed?) compared to quail (and if they eat less?) I believe we have a rooster in the 18 which is an amberlink so I have thought/wanted to hatch some eggs for fun so hatching eggs if we went meat...
I will be posting this in the other groups to get the most eyes on it and don’t necessarily know where it goes so, apologies if that’s wrong! I recently have gotten 18 egg layer chickens Mar 2. Originally was supposed to be max of 10 so you may see where this is going lol. I have been nosing...
Hi all! 1391 pages is a ton to go through but I’m up in the northwest less than very short distances from the border and 40ish west of Toledo! Just figured better late than never to drop in and say howdy!
Quick question! How long before you let your birds out to free range and they know to get back to the run/coop for the evening? They are about 10ish weeks old now and have been out in the coop/run for 2 weeks. Would they be okay now or wait till egg laying age? There are 18 of them so it would...
I’m going to try to remember to take more pictures and keep some documentation as they grow! At around 10-12 weeks as of right now by my guess. 3 Pearl Stars were significantly bigger than the rest when we got them so Im guessing they are on the older side while the rest are right around 10...
8ish week old chicks are finally coming out of the coop! Let me know if you spot any boys besides our Amberlink Clark! Tried to get atleast one of everyone but may have missed a few!
Would his offsprings be a guess by golly barnyard mutt mix? I will still get some pictures up on here tonight of all the others incase someone spots another roo! Thank you so much!!
When I get pictures of everyone, are there any certain angles I should take just in case anyone else might have been misgendered? Just front and back of everyone? Or are they about easy enough to pick out in a crowd?
This is the most recent when they went out to the coop Thursday. I really meant to get a picture of each of the 18 as they went in but forgot.
Here they are at 4-5 weeks old. I will try to get some good pictures of everyone tonight!
Would getting a blue laying gene rooster make anything different since most hens are brown egg layers along with a few white egg layers? Should I just got welsummer for some speckled eggs? Outside of eggs will there be any chance for oddball cool looking plumages or since we have quite a few...
