...like that would be at least $100 or even more at a craft sale.
Maybe a swap meet is different than one of those? More like a flea market here?
You should make an apron to hold chicks or small chicks while moving them around - keep your arms free to gather things but keep the chook contained.
If you have rocks on your property, that's what we mostly used. We have a lot of rock. Free dog deterrent. I'm not home for a few days or I'd share a picture. Hardware skirt with rocks to anchor it, would work even better.
...the bottom of the frames. I wouldn’t bury them, but you can get wire panels (called hog or cattle panels) and lay them on the ground as an apron to deter animals from digging under your coop panels.
Next place the coop panels along the middle of the panels so that you have both the outside...
You can get landscape staples that are 12” I think. Maybe 10. Much longer than the usual staples. That should work.
The way the apron works is not that much about it being anchored, but mainly because digging predators start at the base of the wall they are trying to dig under.
I'd preferably not want perma-anchoring right now since I think we may move it in a couple years or so. Though if I could maybe stick some metal tubes to anchor it I think that'd work.
In dry ground, while the wood will eventually rot, as long as it stays dry, should hold for a few years. However, rainy seasons, hoses, leaky buckets....will accelerate that process. A hardware cloth apron spread around it will prevent digging into the coop. How to anchor it....I'm not sure on.
If you're not able to do the apron and need the drainage, you could do a layer of gravel under a layer of hardware cloth and then top that with a lot of woodchips or whatever bedding you use. It will still break down and you can do deep litter method. You don't need to be directly on dirt to...
Don't put it in as the floor, it's an extra cost and has the potential of damaging feet if the birds dig down to it. Better to do an apron around the perimeter: https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/new-coop-project.1169916/page-2#post-18481208
I think it looks like a great frame! Hardwire cloth on the sides/top, and apron to keep anyone from digging in.
The biggest challenge will probably be eliminating the gaps around the door, that a predator could squeeze through.
...to watch the flock antics. We reinforced the bottom with hardware cloth behind 16” skirt. We will add gravel on top of buried hardware cloth apron.
For winter we add corrugated clear panels, these lasted us 6 winters, they have become brittle and cracked so we will buy new in the fall. The...
...one was letting too much of the droppings through...the new one works great and honestly is easier on my back :)
There is a 2ft predator apron all the way around with the mulch and stone on top of that. I just started landscaping this weekend while hubby works on the feeder hopper and the...
No I wish I were that handy! It’s the producers pride defender from TSC. I waterproofed and painted it, covered the run with hardware cloth with a buried apron and added a ventilation fan, automatic door, etc. They also sell just the run section if you have something to attach it to.
Neither one of them was during the time they have young so that wasn't it. I had seen that particular racoon around before. Yes, our coop is well protected. They were free ranging and I forgot to close the run door two nights in a row. I've got an automatic coop door now so no issues.
They were likely teaching their young to hunt if nothing was ate.
I recommend hw cloth wire and an apron to protect your birds at NIGHT. I've lost 2 birds free ranging during the day none at night
