Once touched by human hand, parents won't come back to their litter.

    The coyotes are here again...

I spread bottles(with holes punched) with wolf urine soaked tampons around my run and property. Have 7 I believe of them, 4 around run and 3 across property. We are in rural farmland, coyotes and deer are regular. Said to be coyote deterrent, they are afraid of wolves.

What to feed newly hatched chicks?

Eggs yes.... Happen to have cheese, like feta cheese? Or, even spoiled milk? Wife makes cheese out of it and they slaughter it right away. They really like white cheese crumbles.

    RAT WAR!!

We had rats kill 8 quails and almost kill one. yes, it's very good intentional to be worried about "secondary poisoning" but rats are so much KNOWN menace that I'd rather take care of them the way it works. Or, soon enough we WILL have them in the house and everywhere else. With all the related...

    RAT WAR!!

I solved mine for now. But I might be a bit different from the rest here. I keep out chickens closed for the night. Also, our runs are fully fenced. So I can do what I did I tried traps, caught one or two, but they keep coming. So I finally made them little "brownies" out of cheapest ground...

    Tax implications

Not really anywhere else to ask... Anyone ran their chicken farm as "hobby farm"? There is tax deduction for that. Thank you

    Rats

That's dandy, but question do have I. As we have moles and rats and not really telling which ones are worse menace. Hunting moles, how much damage will a rat terrier do to the garden beds? As they are diggers, right? We have literally hundreds of yards of mole tunnels raised in garden beds and...

    Rats

Thanks to all for suggestions. Will try mixes. Got all ingredients. There's also slow change in DW attitude. She has large veggies garden next to chicken farm and Mr Mole raveges there. I told her -rat terrier. Pause was longer this time. So it's turning. I would get a dog as far as it's...

    Rats

No way to stop birds from tossing grain all over the runs. BTW, we are full fenced and mostly netted from the top. Rats barrow under. We hide feeders for the night. But what's tossed is tossed. I'm only worried about babies. I'll get rat terrier when I retire. Then I can take care of the dog...

    Rats

Guy lived on a farm with over 200 birds. He witnessed guinea rooster take off and attack hawk up in the air, as it was approaching the flock. I figure I'll get couple of roosters and hens and just let them be their way. Many sources online say that they do keep small predators away. Good news -...

    Rats

Thank you. Yep, much of what you say I already did. Both coops are solid wood structures. Quail coops are solid and their runs are all metal mesh covered. All through. As rats once grazed through plastic and got inside and.... That's why I am afraid they will get to the baby chicks in their...

    Rats

With all due respect to rats life, they attack small birds. We lost 8 quails to them. I have no doubt they will get to baby chicks we have now, if they could, but we close them inside for the night and all my coops are now inaccessible to any rodent. Yet, I am still worried that a hungry rat may...

    Ant killer.....

Sure, try it. Just add some salt and peanuts to it, for better taste. just kidding. Couple lb box of Borax is $4 at Winco. Btw, boric acid was used as drops in ophthalmology. That's how safe it is.

    Ant killer.....

Borax has never failed. We just rid of piss ants at the new place we bought. 3 days - boom, gone. I have Borax all over basement now, as precaution, also it went onto several ant mounds we found in the property. You don't really need sugar, as as far as Borax gets onto them, it's done. But...

    All kinds of predators

Brutal - but might work. Promise I'll wait till wife is gone to work before I do this. Concern is, I do not want to turn them into blood thirsty predators too. Just saying. But they do LOVE meat, that's for sure. Peanut butter ahoy!

    All kinds of predators

Actually reason I am cautious about roosters is I left trapped rat once or twice in the run, to see what chickens will do about it. They clearly ignored a dead one. Just sort of glanced at it and that was it.

    All kinds of predators

We have 5 roosters. You think they will protect the girls in case life happens? Peanut butter, huh? Will do. Stale meat worked well also.
