Chicken keeping without coops or with mutiple coops

All of my hens and roosters roost in their tree at night. With the exception of the five game hens that i bought and the one Rhode island red rooster, and of the wellknown breeds that i bought from the feed store, all of my chickens are descended from those original six chickens, and i have...

Help with new mother hen please!

I did essentially the same thing, after having my momma hen and her chicks inside for a few weeks, we moved tthem to a sectioned off area of the coop, where we have just chicken wire separating the babies and the adult members of the coop, so they could get to know each othr. It worked rather well

Help with new mother hen please!

My hens would go broody far from the chicken coop (i let them free range all day), but i have had to move them to a safer area. Before i had divisons in my coop, i put the momma hen and her chicks in a cupboard-turned-nestbox, and put that in my garage.

Hen hiding in dark corner...not sure what is wrong?

I thought she might be egg bound, but when i checked, there was no shell in the vent. She did have white slimy poop that looks like the white part of an egg, except that it wasnt completely transparent. It would just come out, she wasnt pushing or anything. She could have had a soft shell egg, i...

Hen hiding in dark corner...not sure what is wrong?

Im sorry to say that my hen away not too long after my last post. I guess if i had found out about her condition earlier, i could have done something. According to my mom and sister, she had been behaving like that since the morning, but i was gone early in thr morning, so i didnt have time to...

Hen hiding in dark corner...not sure what is wrong?

Thank you all for your replies, i appreciate them. I am tempted to take her to the vet, but the vets around me dont do poultry, but i thought it might be worth a try...i did some reading on hard and sour crop, and some people made their chickem throw up what was in their crop, and they stopped...

Hen hiding in dark corner...not sure what is wrong?

I just came home from work and found one of my hens hiding in the dark corner of the coop with her head in the corner and her eyes closed. She is a RIR mix with game hen, she is maybe 6-7 months old, and she was fine yesterday. I did see water and some white liquid on her backend, i dont know...

Comment by 'RockyVanRhodes' in article 'Common Rooster Myths - Clearing Up Rooster Misinformation'

My very first chicken was a RIR rooster, which I named Rocky Van Rhodes. At first, he was scared of me and my family, would get cranky at night and in the morning and would charge us, but after a lot of patience and treats, he stopped trying to bite me, and he even would come running when he saw...

This is Jack, a Rhode Island Red and game hen mix. He's around 8 months old. His half brother has a similar marbled or speckled look, but with different colors. Anyways, Jack is personally one of my favorites.
