    Breeding silkies

That is so fascinating to me. So if you have a good grasp of genetics, can it be said that you can sex chicks at a day old based off their color?

What breed AND gender is this?

If any of these end up male in the long run, I'm going to stick to sex link breeds only. Ive been trying to put a flock together since July and something always ends up happening. At this rate, I'm not getting any eggs till spring 2026 lol

What breed AND gender is this?

Thank you so much! I was very shocked to find 2 of my 3 LavOrps were males. So I think I'm being extra paranoid with these buffs.

Help me pick a Shetland rooster to keep

I like the coloring of the darker one. But sometimes the sweet ones are the ones that mature out as rude. The stand off red one is already respectful of your space I assume. And might stay that way. Are you wanting to breed them or just keep as you personal flock? If to breed and you're...

What breed AND gender is this?

Revising this thread as I'm paranoid about having a cockerel or 2 in my mix. Note the odd black tail feather tips. Is that cocerel specific? Are there any saddle feathers coming in?

@TheOddOneOut thank you so much for the news. Even if it's bad news lol I'll definitely get right on the task of finding them new flocks to call their own.

    Are they really Lavender Orpingtons?

They might be a bit younger than 5/6 months. But I am pretty sure they're pullets. One has always had less comb development than the rest. Oh please let them all be pullets.

    Are they really Lavender Orpingtons?

Interesting! I thought lavender and blue were both terms for a grey bird. However, I now see blues tend to have a darker head. Thank you for your reply!

    Are they really Lavender Orpingtons?

My pullets have grown and boy are they LEGGY! They're roughly 5 to 6 months old. By this point my australorps were the typical round and fluffed out shape. These are just so lanky. If I didn't already know they were hens, I'd suspect all roos. Is blue jersey giant a thing? Are these truly...

8 week old silkie bantams - any guesses on gender?

Total and complete guess but I think the smaller one is a roo and the larger one is a pullet. 'Her' comb is smoother and her tail looks more round in the group photo.
