At some point I went down a black hole of power requirement calculations and realized it was viable. But I have 4 Mallard derived eggs. The guy wasn't too sure cause they all mingle. And I'm no elitist. I've raised call ducks, regular mallards, a few geese, and this blue swed over time.
I thought about it but instead went with a more local source. They are incubating and I'm also getting a separate hatcher so I can avoid a potential problem with the one I have. But yes, I am in fact trying again. Also over the weekend I got safflowers outdoor pen set up. I'm waiting on a solar...
Update on the shipped egg:
Duckling died in shell. He was having a bit of a hard time when I had fallen asleep. When I woke up this morning he had his head out of the egg and was still. Guess that's just typical. I get 6 eggs and each one of them died throughout incubation. Then the remaining...
Fair point.
Right now I'm a bit worried about one of the shipped eggs I got though. About a month ago (A week after I found the egg) I decided to order some eggs online. Over the course of incubation 5 of the 6 eggs died in shell, real sad thing really. But one has made it to pipping and I can...
Well no it didn't hatch a week later. I found it, I incubated it for 28 days, it hatched. Sorry this isn't a wildlife rescue story ^^; just a lucky coincidence.
One minor thing is it wasn't a wild duck. This was very much a swedish duck. Domesticated ducks don't count as wild since they're essentially abandoned pets. But yeah, it is wild, but what I've come to find is that for the most part, ducks who are free range with male ducks in their flock will...
Basically yeah. Where I live now, there aren't many bodies of water. Just the river and a small pond on a golf course. But people keep abandoning animals there thinking "water = duck fine!" Despite the fact that that's a death sentence. They might live a year or two but they'll be picked off...
Keep us updated! I'd love to see what it would look like as an adult with those handsome eyes. In the meantime I'll be brooding this one indoors for a few weeks then introduce him to the pen and coop I bought shortly after finding the egg. My yard is actually quite big so I can essentially put a...
That's a great combination! I hear there aren't many breeding pairs of swedish ducks left so I might have to look into getting this one a companion. I'm not sure of the sex yet. I'll save it for another day when it's rested up a bit.
Very cute! I recently moved due to getting a position at an astronomy observatory and raising and even occasional wildlife rehabilitation has always been a pet passion of mine. I was a bit worried when I moved here about what I would do now but the town I live in allows farm animals as long as...
Great point. Here the lil guy is dried off and you can definitely tell the color difference.
Cool. I've wanted to try a swedish duck. Glad it's the black one.
In a worse case scenario you can rig up a box with a heat lamp and a tray of water for humidity. The important thing is to keep it warm and keep the conditions higher in humidity. You can afford to be a little less accurate humidity and temperature wise but if you have a thermometer, put it next...
Yeah it was just chilling half underwater when I found it. The only wild ducks Around here are mallards, shovelers, teals, Ruddy duck, cinnamon teal, and the occasional merganser. However, There are a large number of abandoned ducks around here as well (Which infuriates me). And based upon the...
Pretty sure. It doesn't have the distinctive black stripe with two yellow stripes and most of its body has the dark down. If it is a black Swedish that makes me happy since they're a bit on the rare side. Before this I've mostly done rescues of geese, abandoned ducks of the pekin and khaki...
So I was excited to see when I got home that a mystery egg I literally found half in the water of like, the only river in this state, hatched this afternoon. This after he spent 48 hours just chilling and being smug inside his egg and finally getting me worried last night.
Anyways, Best ya girl...
Just popping back through to say that the cost of call duck eggs sure have gone up over the last year. In 2019 I got a bunch and I think it cost me all of 20 bucks? They all hatched and were successfully raised before being given away prior to me moving. So I'm a bit surprised they're now 59...
