It's on and off for a month or so, longest continuous duration maybe 2-3 day, the total jail time was somewhere between 5 - 8 days.
The defining moment, I think, was when I tried to put water inside the rooster jail, the red roo bit me, so I left water container outside for a few hours. When I...
I have rehabilitated one cockerel using a solitary rooster jail.
This bird:
He has bitten me a couple of times, I locked him up for a few days using this rooster jail:
He was allowed to watch other roosters free ranging while reflecting on his own mistakes and has not attacked me for...
You can always try, then come back and ask on this forum when they start to have any specific problem.
There is high chance for them to have health issues, not that they definitely will.
Could be a dual purpose bird. I used to have a sussex chick, he had some serious cleavage, that was so wrong:
Roundie, my dear light sussex darling, I loved you, I really did!
I would recommend poultry powder too - permethrin/pythethrins based, or those using Maldison as active ingredient.
Since there is a chance of mite/lice eggs laid on the shaft of feather, you need to massage the powder into the root of the feathers.
Personally I put powder on the head, back...
Nice camouflage!
Looks like your girls are more adventurous than my rooster flock!
My boys used to roam around further. Then one summer, I lost a couple of birds - the ones that did not go to the coop at night (I was taking care of 2 flocks because other family members were on holidays)...
I only have 6 hens and crow/raven doesn't seem to be bothered by hens nearby, although they seem to choose a time when no one is in the yard and the car is not on the driveway.
Brooder setup - simply because that I can time when I get chicks, I have little control over when my hens will go broody.
I have used broody hen to raise chicks, but it's the other way round: hens went broody so I purchased them fertilised eggs.
I use the most convenient way - collect grasses...
Hens are at our suburban home, last time I sighted a bird of prey was more than 15 years ago. Not many ground predators that's large enough to carry away an adult chicken either, I had lost 1 bird in the past 10 years and that's when a neighbour was building extension and no one was living there...
I have seen the raven/crow stealing eggs twice - egg in its beak!
At one stage, the local ravens/crows came to check the nests every morning to see if there were some eggs to steal. They aim to steal my chickens eggs from the nests before the eggs are collected.
I have been vigilant but the...
I gave this rooster a pedicure last month after he flogged me a couple of times with his spurs. I cut the tip of the spurs then used wood file to make them round. Very satisfied afterwards. None of the other birds in my rooster flock received such a treatment because they were all sweet and...
My chickens love fresh vegetables - lettuce, cabbage(chopped into fine pieces), mustard greens, bok choy, choy sum - they can go through 2kg-3kg of green leaved veges amongst 6 of them in a day if I let them.
On top of that, they free range most of the days on the lawn, they also nibble on...
Sometimes wrinkles have nothing to do with age, it comes with genetics. I have bought Australorp and barnevelder from the same breeder, they came as day olds and starting to have wrinkles at a few months old. They are now nearly 3 yo and very healthy, still wrinkly though.
The picture was taken few months after the mite infestation. There was no visible mite on her when the picture was taken.
During the infestation, I saw both live mites and their eggs on my chickens.
It takes time for the chickens to complete recover from the damage done by a mite/lice.
Do you have some pictures?
If there is a mite/lice infestation, usually you can see live insects on their skin and feather shaft. I don't have much experience with leg mites, but if you do a search on this site, there are heaps of information on that.
Like said above, damaged feathers will not...
6 hens with 4 roosters, except hens are at suburban home & roos are on the farm.
I do plan to breed them down the track, but I need to work on the fencing so the hens don't get hurt when I move them on to the farm.
My flock on the farm was constantly swooped by magpies when they first arrived there. Recently, I have been giving leftovers to the magpies after feeding the flock (magpie comes around when I feed the flock). I have not seen the pies attacking my birds since. Apparently, some magpies can be...
I buy cat food for my chickens occasionally, the tuna ones. According to the labels, protein is only about 17%-20%, depends on the brand. Wholemilk powder is another protein source for them, the protein content in that is about 25%, but since chickens are lactose intolerant, I can only used it...
