    8 weeks old chicks

Thank you everyone! I'll take 5 out of 6, but man, are we sad to say goodbye to that sweet boy! My girls call him "the gentleman rooster" because he lets all the girls eat first when we give treats ;)

    When to fees layer feed.

When do I switch to later feed? Once I start seeing eggs, or as they approach laying age and when would that be?

    8 weeks old chicks

The chicks are 8 weeks old now (except our Australorp, she is 7 weeks) Still no crowing or aggressive behavior from Nugget or BO. What you think, is Nugget our only roo?

    new member in Bakersfield, CA

Hello, I am in Bakersfield also. We started our first flock this spring. Our Buff Orpington is looking like a roo and we cannot keep him if that is the case. He is very sweet and great with my kids. Just wondering if you are looking for a rooster if he does turn out to be a rooster. Here he...

    *Buff Orpington Thread!*

I I have never heard of those....I will look it up, but are they cruel? I would hate to turn him mean out of frustration. We are not even supposed to have chickens at all, so a rooster is a definite no-no!

    *Buff Orpington Thread!*

Nugget was unanimously voted a cockerel already at 4 weeks, and here he is now at 7 weeks. No crowing yet, but I think it is time to start looking for a new home before the kids and I get anymore attached! He is so sweet and acts nothing like how I have heard roosters described so far. He is...

will horizontal nipples work with a system like this?

I am working on choosing a watering system and I like this concept with the bucket outside of the coop. Will this work with horizontal nipples? Is the valve necessary? What is the purpose of the valve? This is our first flock/coop. Thanks for your input.

    horizontal watering systes

Hello all, I am wondering if anyone has any pictures of their watering system to share? I am hoping to see something that will be a great space saver with our current set up. Thanks.

    I'm at a loss

She is beautiful! Wow, just stunning! We have six chicks in our first flock and only got one EEer, but she has been the prettiest from the get go! The day we brought her home! Now 6 weeks old.

    Please tell me I'm wrong!

Thank you LofMc! It is all so interesting! I have only scratched the surface with what I have learned, but I find it all so much fun and fascinating! Elsa has been the prettiest from the get go, and those blue feathers had me wondering! Those 2 links were great! Thank you! I am hoping she stays...

    Please tell me I'm wrong!

Lol, if not before than :) I just wish he would act more like a roo to help convince me ;) he is the first to push his way to the back of the group when they are startled ;) Since I have got you...Elsa our EE has a lot of blue fluffy feathers under her brown wings. Does that help pinpoint any of...

    Table scraps/veggies

Thank you, I also read no raw potatoes on the list you gave me, so I am guessing the potato peels are a no-no anyway?

    Please tell me I'm wrong!

Yes, Nugget has been obvious for a couple/few weeks now, but I have to admit, a very small part of me is still in denial ;)

    Please tell me I'm wrong!

Just to give you a comparison here are 3 of my chicks at the same age ( they will be 6 weeks tomorrow) and same breed as 3 of yours. I am a newbie so my opinion really isn't worth much, but just comparing them, yours look like pullets to me :) Nugget our Buff Orp. Rooney our Barred Rock...

    Table scraps/veggies

Thank you! I forgot to mention they are currently 5-6 weeks old. Does that change anything? Can they rip this up, or should I dice it?

    Table scraps/veggies

Is there a list of foods not to give chicks/chickens? Can they have potato and carrot peels? How small do the pieces need to be?

    Coop training

I am in the central valley and I have been putting mine outside all day and bringing them in at night now for a week. I have 5 that are 5 weeks old and one that is 4 weeks. They are in an enclosed run when outside. They are loving it and doing great! They love to sprawl out in the sun, it is...
