This is my biggest or best-learned coop lesson. I put up some used clear plastic roof panels over our run and coop area instead of just the bird netting that I've used over the last several years.... huge difference. I had no idea it would make such a difference. Sure I knew it would be less...
No real breed. I believe he had a splash marans /easter egger parent and one solid white parent. Might have to make a scarf for him (not supposed to have roosters in the neighborhood.)
Any idea from feather pattern or leg colors if this might have the blue or green trait gene? Just...
Thought it was a hen... About 5 1/2 to 6 months old. Usually kinda timid around the two older hens and some others the same age. Today my wife heard something crowing like a rooster and is pretty sure it was this one that did it. Could it just be crowing oddly or do you all think...
I've heard an owl in the past but not for quite some time. Mine too is in a corner of my yard that is under some large trees. Half the run is 6-foot fence corner of my lot.. the other is the picket fencing. It feels more sheltered than anywhere else in my yard.
Aart.. my run is enclosed with wood fencing to waste high and bird net from waist high to 6 foot. Something tore a whole or made a hole about 6 inches in the netting.
I found the dead hen at 5 pm.. still daylight. It was seen before at around 10 am.
No real signs of struggle.. did not...
I am down to two Hens... Has anyone found dead hens in their run area where just there neck had injuries? Last night my full sized hen had a nickle to quarter size hole in her throat. No other damage was seen. What would do this but not do further damage? I was shocked there weren't...
Sorry for the long delay.. when I first saw your question I just wasn't sure.. but actually with it being as hot as it has been lately with no rain.. bugs haven't been that active. I've not seen the hordes of flies and gnats you get after a lot of rain. Come to think about it I haven't seen...
Just an update. Not sure what is was specifically or holistically that helped. After evacuating her crop (suspecting it was all from sour crop and mites) and giving her vitamin water (specifically vitamin E) with garlic and probiotics, she has made a complete recovery! she looked down in...
No moldy food. everything is on sand. Food is put out each morning and eaten until gone. Stored in dry bins. We also did 3 of the Epsom salt bath treatments for 20 minutes each. She seems to like them.
No real difference that I would tell last night after emptying her...
hey all. 2 year old hen holding head down and shaking head. Standing up her head is on the ground almost. She can at times lift it up but it is like she is trying to tilt forward. Very lethargic for the last several days. We found she had some mites and used mite drops in her ear and...
this was a question I had (sorry to interrupt this thread.) I have hens that hatched chicks 4 weeks ago. When could I expect them adult hens to start back laying eggs?
I wish I knew, it is a day old. trying to figure out the feather thing. Just hatched last night. I got fertile eggs from a friend with mixed flock so my broody EE could hatch some out. The others are all yellow with light reddish stripes down their back. It has the dot which makes me...
