    horselover1999's 2025 flock

He only challenged me 1 or 2 times when he was about 2 months old, but he learned quickly! I need to take updated pics of each of them.

    horselover1999's 2025 flock

Update: They started laying on July 3rd. Their eggs are very adorable. This is from before they learned where to lay their eggs... Olive has gotten super sweet, even though she was the most scared of me when she was little. She jumped on my shoulder today when I bent down to put their water...

    Starting duck egg incubation tomorrow

If there are cracks and you wash them, that invites bacteria to invade the egg. Ducks are muddy by nature, and there are dirty eggs that hatch perfectly all the time. I would just brush or rub off excess loose dirt, but I wouldn't mess with anything really stuck to the shell. You risk damaging...

    horselover1999's 2025 flock

They'll be 8 weeks old tomorrow! Basil has started his feeble attempts at crowing. The leghorn rooster is also very sweet.

What do you do to maintain your chickens.

I would like to add to the Health part that mites don't make them that itchy, but can cause anemia, so regular checks of the vent, under the wings, and base of the neck are key. Blu-Kote is an antiseptic that's great at masking injuries from being pecked at further. Starter can be fed until...

    Are my Chickens beyond HELP?

TSC has a long standing deal with Hoovers Hatchery. I don't think they even know or have control over what breeds arrive each week. I rehomed an aggressive cockerel a few weeks ago and I made sure to say that he had been aggressive since he was 2 days old. I made sure his new owner knew what...

    Fifty Nifty Hatchalong

Could I have Oklahoma and name it Indy, for the Oklahoma state wildflower, the Indian Blanket?

    Aggressive rooster

I would cull him from the flock. There are too many good roosters out there to justify keeping a mean one. Bad roosters can be trained to a degree, but hormones almost always take over. I hatched 2 cockerels from some eggs I bought that I could tell were cockerels from day 1. One was watchful...

What do you do to maintain your chickens.

Having seen commercial poultry operations in person, it’s not abuse. You have every right to hold your own opinion, though.

What do you do to maintain your chickens.

Protein cannot be turned into fat, protein and fat are fundamentally different. Protein, no matter what source, is broken down into individual amino acids to be absorbed through the intestinal wall. Once it is in the blood, it can either go through their system without being used and they would...

    horselover1999's 2025 flock

Coop trainng update! The first night they were in the coop, they were in the far corner of the run, huddled together, and we had to pick each chick up and place them in the coop. The second and third nights, they were huddled by the big coop door and walked themselves in when I opened it...

    Wrong end pip!

I stress that you should take your time on this. I was only confident enough to assist out because it had started to zip AND it had been 24+ hours. I have had a chick hatch on its own with its yolk sac hanging out unabsorbed and it died the next day.

    Wrong end pip!

I recently (last month) had a chick pip at the wrong end. When I candled it, it looked like the air cell was extended in a peninsula-like way to allow it to internally pip, and I did see an internal pip. It externally pipped a few hours later, then the pip got a little bigger about 12 hours...

    horselover1999's 2025 flock

They graduated to the coop today! We had to repair some things and add some things. We sealed off the space between the roof and the wall with some extra wood to prevent wild birds from coming into the run, tacked loose fencing to poles, and replaced the ramp, since it was falling apart. We...

    Hopeful Hatch Grow-along

Luckily, my state has only had 2 cases in the past year, and none in my county or the immediate surrounding counties.
