I did notice a few black dots on some of the girls combs but nothing real large and not on every chicken. I'll read the article that Chippysmom put on here for me. Thanks y'all for such prompt responses :-)
Hi, I have a question & if this isn't the place to ask it, can someone head me in the right direction? My chickens have started shaking their heads, not violently but noticeably. I have 8 & 7 of them are laying pretty consistently & seem very healthy otherwise. Thanks.
I have been checking on the girls every hour since I opened the pop door around 8:30. They all went scurried out & are going back in to the coop only to lay their eggs. I left the heat lamp on in the coop in case they do want to go in & warm up a bit. It is 10 in their run last time I checked...
Thanks a bunch Fisher, that helps a lot. I do have a thermometer in the run, in the coop & right outside the run door..lol Now that I understand this, I can make better decisions.
I have mine on tonight too, I did last night as well but I normally don't do the light thing any more. I did the first year we had them but I only had 2 then & I worried they couldn't keep each other warm enough, now I have 8 & they all huddle together on the roost & that makes me feel better...lol
I'm going to ask a dumb question here.....if the wind chill is -whatever, & the run is pretty snug & not too drafty, does it still feel like the -windchill? I'd love to let the girls in the run tomorrow cause they'll not be real nice to each other if they have to stay in the coop. Right now I...
Thanks Chique. I'm thinking they'll be fine & they'll do what they want. I have my pop door on an electric motor & it opens at 7 am right now. It closes at 6 pm which I found out the night before last, needs changed. I went out to check on them & there were no chickens in the coop & the door...
I forgot to mention our whole run is under roof. We have clear in the back & tan in the front which allows just the perfect amount of sun in year round. Below is what it looks like in the summer. (and during construction). The double white door on the right is their coop. It looks better...
Thanks Fisher, our run is pretty snug, we have clear plastic in the front so they can catch the sun when it's out and the other walls are all dog ear fencing with the opening between the slats covered with other slats so that does keep out the wind. I know they'll come out, they love being out...
It's supposed to be 6 degrees here on Sunday during the day...I don't even want to talk about factoring the wind chill in...anyway, our run is closed in & doesn't get a big drafts so I am wondering if I can let the girls out or should I keep them in the coop? I do have a hanging patio heater in...
I know, I worry every time we use the heat lamp. Last night was the first night we used it since last winter. Maybe 1 more night then it might be warm enough although Sunday is predicted -4 as an actual temp.
We use a cookie tin heater & one of the strands of lights went out so we had frozen water first thing this morning. It was predicted to be -10 to 20 here last night so we put the red heat lamp in the coop, that kept it around 24 which was good. We rarely use the heat lamp as the girls do not...
My Black Australorp went through the worst molt this year but she is looking mighty fine now (she hates it when I post pics of her molting ;-) )
Pics before molt
Yes I did & I love them all. I got a Silver Laced Wyandott & a Gold one too, Dominique, Barred Rock, Golden Comet and a Black Australorp and I wish I could have about 20 more..lol So many other breeds I'd love to have. I am getting enough eggs to sell some & get $4 a dozen for them. So on...
