So, after 2 years of having chickens, we've gotten our first emergency. One of our girls was attacked by the neighbor's dog Wednesday eve. She's got several puncture wounds on her back between her shoulders, chest and rump above her tail feathers (what few are left.) I cleaned her up as best as...
Oh. Thank you. That's what I was thinking. I read somewhere that you can make a mix of yellow sulfur powder and Vaseline and apply it. Have you heard of that?
any idea what this could be? I started seeing it about a week ago on the first chicken. Then a few days later on a second one. Now I see it on a third. Anyone have an idea what this could be and what I should do?
Thanks!
I originally wanted 6. Here's our story:
Started out with 6 leghorn pullets.
1 died a few days later
Came home with 1 bantam as a replacement.
A few weeks later, we discovered that 2 were actually meat birds.
Came home with 3 RIRs as "replacements," but decided to keep the meat birds anyway...
Wow, 5 out of 7. That's crazy. We got 6 and 2 turned out as meat birds.
We kept ours and are raising them in a good environment. We know how they've been raised and cared for. My kids know we are going to eat them eventually.
I'm not sure if I could actually cull them. But I will be there...
It does! We are adding a section to connect it to the coop.
My kids put the chick on top of the trampoline. It's so funny to watch. The chicks don't even freak out.
we've been using our trampoline as a temporary run for our littles until their permanent one is finished. I've seen swings before, so I thought I'd try one. :)
So sorry to hear you lost 3. How long with the sand before you noticed problems?
We have 9 chickens. They will only be in the coop for sleeping. But it does get hot/humid here. I know some people who use sand, but I don't like the dust part. Plus, they'll have plenty of dirt for dusting in the...
So, we have a range of ages, 1 week to 5 week old littles. They are on our porch in brooders at night but for the past 2 weeks we've been taking them outside for day trips to an enclosure under our trampoline. We are still in the process of building their coop and run.
Do I need to give...
That's just wrong! LOL
FYI, we now have double the number chicks. If we had gotten the correct ones at TSC, we would still have 6, not 11. ;) I still don't think i would go there for chicks again.
So I just got home from the feed store with 2 new little Barred rocks. :-)
Then my neighbor comes over and asks if I'd like a little chick. They found one in their backyard this morning. I said, OMG! It was our little one that we thought was lost!
LOL! My husband only wanted 4 chickens, that was 4 weeks ago, we now have 10 and I'm getting a few more today. my kids want ducks. I love it - Chicken math!
no worries! I actually just found Russell's Feed facebook page saying they received Rhode Island Reds, Black Sex Links, Barred Rocks, and Red Sex Links today. Gonna go check them out. So far we have 3 Leghorn, 1 Bantam, and 2 Rhode Island reds. Since this is our first time in chickenville, i...
