This is an older thread but I'll share my experience anyway. Sadly, the Govee wifi/bluetooth sensors are notoriously unreliable.
I started with a set of 3 Govee wifi sensors and a hub. 2 of the 3 sensors lost their calibration mid incubation, but each time it was unclear what was happening and...
Your questions raised a good point though. For grit/ calcium supplementing, I use both ground oyster shells and ground up chicken/quail egg shells. I had run out of egg shell type for a week or so. I actually have a completed batch in a jar ready to serve, but I hadn't served it yet. Serving...
I don't mean there's some manure devouring my hens, but rather a favorite hen of mine is now suddenly pecking at and I'm assuming eating other quail poo. This has been a very bright hen. Up until this point, I assumed it was my brightest lol. It lays a big solid egg pretty much every day, and...
I've read that coturnix are hardier than many of us give them credit for. Perry Schofield in Canada has written that in Alberta in (relatively) extremely cold winter weather, his coturnix do fine as long as they have protection from the elements, wind, rain, snow etc. I believe he also wrote...
I had two young falb fee hens doing this neck jerk thing right after laying their eggs. They only did it for five minutes max. After a couple of weeks, they stopped. I have three falb fee sisters. One did not do it. I only mention falb fee because their hatch mates of other colors did not...
The first ones I didn't soak at all. Straight in to the freezer after processing. The second time I just soaked them in a bowl of spring water for 24 hours in the fridge. But I later read that someone was using a vacuum sealer to avoid freezer burn, so I was wondering how much of an issue it...
Thanks I appreciate it. I like Nabiki's processing guide, but I'm wondering about the ribs. I've noticed some quail recipe videos where the chefs are removing the ribs etc. Do you do ever this? Or is this generally not done?
After soaking for 24 to 48 hours, do you super dry your meat before freezing to help avoid future freezer burn? If so, what do you use for the drying? Paper towel/ towel/ time? I'm new so I'm curious about best practice etc. Thanks
For future reference, if you later decide to go with a color, I keep hearing that the Scarlet/ Range roux hens lay more eggs and for longer period of time than most other colors. I can't verify this personally; however, my one Range hen has laid a big egg every day since she started 3 weeks ago.
I've noticed that two of my falb fee hens sometimes have brief episodes of up and down head twitching or head spasms right after laying. Has anyone noticed before? Is this a known thing? After 2 - 5 minutes, they seem back to normal, 100% fine.
I haven't tried this but I read on another forum that someone successfully sprayed a group of quail with 50% white vinegar and 50% water before placing them all together in a new, unfamiliar environment. The poster said that his result was they all got along. Your roo sounds like an extreme case...
I just wanted to share that I am using my entry level incubator one more time while I source out an upgraded version. In doing so, this time I placed the incubator inside a used cooler, you Coleman picnic style that I purchased at thrift shop, and I just can't believe how stable my temperatures...
When you can verify, please let us know.
Based on the pics,
#1 looks like a Tibetan (no feather pinning) roo (has red tone in its mask and chinstrap).
For me, it's difficult to know for sure without seeing a hen and roo side by side because in these pics, its chest is darker which also...
