This spring I knew I needed another coop (two just for chickens, even with one having three pens, was obviously not enough). I was on a budget, and since I didn't want the project to take all year, I needed it to be something I could build completely on my own--I had a deadline and intended to...
Anyone interested in goose eggs for hatching? I don't have a bator to dedicate to them, but I've got nearly a dozen now. They're free to anyone who wants to meet me in Utah Valley on a day when I go up there (from Fillmore), or if you're in Nephi and we can arrange to meet. I'll also be going to...
Thanks! The coop where the turkeys are living doesn't have access to power and I'd rather not stretch a lamp out there yet, as it really is quite cold still. Hopefully once it starts to warm up she'll decide she's ready to start laying and I'll end up with a few babies. I do intend to incubate...
So, I have a few questions. I have a pair of blue slate x bourbon red turkeys and am very much looking forward to hatching poults this spring, so I have a few questions. I did a search on BYC and found out incubating information, but I wondered when I might expect her to start laying (she was...
I wasn't sure where to post this, but I figured this was a safe bet! I'm having a contest on my blog this week and giving away a bunch of new books, and gift certificates for a vinyl signs, and some fun cake things. One of the gift certificates is good for pet supplies, vinyl and transfer tape...
Good luck! I'd been having definitely hatching problems lately, with way less than half developing close to full term. I've finished hatching to sell only last month, these are bantams for my own stock for spring (bought 25 chicks last fall and wouldn't you know I only had 7 hens--three of which...
I don't think it's a vitamin depletion thing, I wonder if it's just about the way she sits or something. It's always so random how one chick will have this problem while the others don't. Maybe someone else has better advice!
How fun that your babies are already ready to be big kids and roost with the adults! It always amazes me how fast they grow up. One day they can barely walk and the next they are practically flying around the brooder.
hose are some odd looking feathers. Not curled, so their aren't frizzled but kind of sticking out there. It's possible as the rest of his feathers come in that they may straighten out and look right. It's hard to tell when they are so young. My silkies' feathers kind of look like they are poking...
Ditto on watch him. I don't worry about pulled feathers unless they really clear a big space or blood shows up. I have a pullet I had to pull from the flock because she was everyone's whipping boy and not only had half of the feathers pulled from her rear section, but had a big wound where they...
You also need to figure that your location is going to make a difference for how many eggs you'll get each day because of weather. I was getting nearly an egg a day from my ladies this spring (12-13 from 15 birds) but when it got hot it dropped down to half that many. It picked back up when the...
I would definitely get rid of the one that's attacking you. I'd hold off on the other two unless you are getting aggressive behaviors from the second roo. I have a roo that comes running every time I come near because he wants attention and to see if I have treats--he's bossy enough with the...
I had about that many per square feet in my coop last winter and it wasn't a problem even though my run wasn't covered--but we had a mild winter and they were able to go out every day. If you have bad storms that will cause a problem you might want to consider your options.
You must do a lot more hand feeding than I do--mine would take the bowl every time over the scary human's hand, even if it does bring me food and water and treats all the time.
Last year my BR pullets didn't start laying until 27-28 weeks. The rest of my hens had gone to molt, so no one was laying from Halloween to Easter--I'm really hoping that's not the case this year! Then everyone started laying within ten days--including the quail inside the house. I got my first...
I've gotten a couple of shell-less eggs from my chickens just randomly too. Unless you get another one soon, I wouldn't worry about it. Sometimes it just happens.
Or should I say snacks for turkeys? I don't want to eat the turkey as snacks, not this year, anyway.
I admit, we've been bad and haven't handled the turkeys or guineas much at all, so they are all really skittish around me. We moved them into a new pen last month and will be allowing them to...
