Hi RhodeRunner, I found out the RIRs from the UofA Heritage Chicken Program originated from Don Shaver when he donated some of his flock in 1990. Here's a neat writeup about the line: http://uofaheritagechicken.tumblr.com/post/83882621660/shaver-birds-help-preserve-genetics

    Spring 2017 first timers post!

One of my of 4 really enjoys roosting (the potential rooster currently named Beverly) on the roosts in the coop/run and the other three don't seem as enthused. Now when they're inside at night, all 4 perch on the edge of the Rubbermaid tub :) Sometimes they nod off while perching on the edge...

    Plymouth Rock thread!

Sorry pioneerchick816, I'm in Canada and U of A here is the University of Alberta. Right now the program here teams up with a Farm Supply store and all proceeds from the sale of chicks goes back to the Heritage Chicken program. I'm not sure about Arkansas, but one of the professors here...

I'm thinking Beverly might turn into Jean-Luc Picard ;) The comb hasn't changed much in size over the past 2 weeks but s/he was the fastest feathering chick of my flock. When should green feathers start to appear that might be the obvious sign of a roo?

The power was out for 4+ hours and the garage was dark and drafty...so they got the fireplace treatment :) The dog was quite happy to have his babies close by! They're pretty feathered out, but still a couple of downy spots. They love being outside, but we went from 90F on Tuesday to about 45F...

Thanks! These 2 are from the U of A Heritage Chicken Program. I learned at their seminar that the line these chickens are from haven't had any selected breeding since 1910 (the flock originated in Saskatchewan) and there was a famous hen "Lady Victorine" who laid 358 eggs in 1929 (a world record...

    Spring 2017 first timers post!

My flock turned a month old today :D We had a big wind and rain storm in Alberta today (+30 [90F] yesterday and +8 [45F] for a high today), so the flock didn't get to spend any time outside! Instead they got warm by the fireplace after spending part of the day with no power!

My chicks are 1 month old today. We had a wild spring storm today here in Alberta and the power went out...so my crew got spoiled and kept warm by the fireplace! Deanna is still the smallest of my 4, but she's catching up! Deanna Beverly (I hope!) Duke sticking close to his flock! the whole...

Went to a great "Backyard Flock" workshop on Tuesday evening. The staff from the Heritage Chicken Program (where I got my flock) are quite certain my 2 PRs are both girls :D

Mine is sleeping on the couch with his giant teddy bear as I type :) I think he will be quite protective of his flock, because he's very protective of the wild mallards who visit our pond (the only barking he does is at crows, ravens and magpies when they get too close to the pond...and when the...

11 Day old Rhode Island Reds and Plymouth Rocks

Here's Seven at Day 6 with dark feathers. I'll try to get a good shot of their wings tomorrow in the natural light. Both look to be feathering in a similar pattern.
