it is somewhat comforting to know i am not the only one experiencing this issue. i never thought the heat would be an issue, i am in northern PA, i didn't think our heat has been bad enough to effect them!
yup, around march most of them stopped and i started getting only 2-3 a day... last summer the almost exact same group of hens were giving me over a dozen a day at least.
well we killed 2 chickens today that we had planned to eat. when plucking them i found lice i had looked at some of my hens before and never seen any.
i am googling and not finding evidence that this is what would be causing them not to lay. they do not seem to be "infested" and are otherwise...
just noticed this on a chicken i am plucking. i had checked my chickens before for parasites and never saw anything (my hens haven't been laying and i have been trying to find the problem).
the hen who is in this picture didn't have many, and looked very healthy otherwise, didn't see big...
oh no, i am sorry to hear you have the same problem!! i hope we can both figure out what is going on.
have you tried deworming them or anything like that?
i have 2 roosters that are definitely doing their jobs!
i have used food grade DE in the past, maybe i will add some to their feed...
i wish it was as simple as a critter eating the eggs. they are simply not laying :(
i assume that some of them will lay less due to age... but not laying at all seems odd for healthy, free range 2-3 year olds.
i have 19 hens, 2 roosters. pretty much all heritage breeds. one is a young hen born here last summer. about half are probably 2 years old, and the other half i don't know, i got them from a friend.. they may be older. they are free range, forage all day, and also get a bit of blue seal organic...
so do you think i just happened to get them during their molt and that's why they are all crazy looking? it's been a good month now. i guess molting takes a while.
it does sound like they may not have been kept in the most sanitary conditions where they were before, my husband said he didn't see...
oh we actually have a big spring fed pond that they all swim in. they are in the water on and off during the day, they bathe themselves a lot. i don't think they had access to water at their old place, so i had thought about that being a problem.
i will look at them closely to se if i can spot...
my husband purchased some muscovy ducks about a month ago; a drake, 3 adult females, and 6 ducklings. the adults all had messy plumage, and the drake was missing a lot of feathers. probably more than half, he doesn't have hardly any tail feathers and his whole chest is bare. we kind of assumed...
just wanted to give an update, so no one thinks i just let that bird suffer alone.
i kept a close eye on him that day, though i wasn't able to physically check him myself, he is not used to ever being touched or picked up. i got a feeling that his leg wasn't broken though, so i decided to wait...
so i think my magpie drake might have a broken leg :(
yesterday morning, i found his partner, a crested duck, dead in the road. they NEVER ever go in the road. i think something may have chased them during the night and they ended up in the road. anyhow.. the drake looks like he has some kind...
i'm not sure what the bean at the tip of their bill is supposed to be??
i think the person he got them from only had muscovies. they may have had lighter colored drakes, i do not know. i know they had other drakes, so another one might be the dad. my 4 adults are all the same coloration as the...
my husband got 13 muscovies this week, 9 of which are ducklings. all the adults are mostly black, including the drake. i am wondering if the 2 light colored ducklings are actually muscovies? can they be yellow instead of black?
