Internet pictures are notorious for being off-color and coupled with being so young I will pass on the two chicks. The Purple hen is in molt and the light feathers are probably old sun-faded feathers that have not been replaced yet. Look for white under the chin and white on the outside...
I find it interesting that both of my emu like to be inside of the sheep barn, perhaps it is because they prefer sheep feed over what I was giving them. On a positive note they have seem to have settled down.
I have the hatch dates from the last owner. She was a little off but basically March of 2023:
March 25 2023 for the male March 9, 2023 female
So 2.5 years of age. Dec 21st is first day of winter here and the following four weeks usually have long spells that stay below freezing, well...
Things I have done to 'clean' a dirt pen floor; use a weed burner and flame the dirt to kill microorganisms on the ground. You can spread agricultural powdered lime on the ground and lightly work it into the dirt and water it in. You can flame the dirt a second time and plant grass seed. The...
You can rule out worms as well since they haven't been outside on the dirt. There is some type of irritant in otherwise healthy chicks so I would look at the bedding. Watch closely at the skin just below the eyes to see if the skin puffs out with every breath, that would be an indication...
Peahens will lay an egg every second or third day until they have enough eggs to set. We see viability go down after ten days. So a clutch of ten eggs will be close to two or three weeks old. Do you know how often emu lay? Also peahens will lay the eggs scattered about but will gather them...
For now the hen is in a 30x100 meter paddock and Limu is in one about half that size. We intend to let them out into the ten acre pasture but will wait until they settle down and learn where food and shelter is as well as getting used to us. Perhaps after winter is over near the end of February.
I have messaged the person I got them from to get a hatch date because I am not sure what she meant by the term 'first season'. Ask me anything about bees or peacocks and I will have an answer but I know that every species will have their own peculiarities. Translating northern and southern...
Mid-winter here is well below freezing every night, sometimes in the negative *F. How does the male keep the eggs from getting ruined in the cold?
I am not really interested in producing a lot of chicks, maybe enough to offset the feed bill. What I am interested in is watching and interacting...
The pair I have are coming into their first breeding season and have been raised together. When we went to pick them up Saturday, the gal who had them said that the hen, Mumu, was being 'hormonal' and ran the male off into the overgrown woods. He came back that evening and we transported them...
Yeah, like in the Peafowl forum, at the top of the page there are a list of informative topics, threads pertaining to genetics, health and medications, housing, etc.
We are no strangers to raising fowl; we have chickens, ducks, damn guineas, pheasants, and about 500 peafowl. We came across a coming three year pair of Standards and couldn't resist buying them. I hate and joke about newbys buying birds unprepared but here we are.
We live on 160 acres and...
It's pretty cool to have a bird with a unique mutation but it will be really special when you can prove that it will breed true. Any new mutation has to be able to replicate itself for three generations before it is recognized as a new color mutation. For now, a single unique bird is just a...
