I a total newbie, with one (unplanned) rooster who regularly crows at 0400 and even 0300, pitch dark, then shuts up for an hour or two then crows throughout the day. We're out in the boonies, so the noise isn't an issue for neighbors, but oy...
They're not the best pics but...
One pic is from the outside with the door...for orientation, with our typical weather (either blowing from the west or a Nor'easter) this is the leeward side of the coop. The last pic is of the corner where they've been laying. I know the straw bale is...
I don't know where alex5 is, but most of the snow we got melted in the sun, but it's full on winter here despite our green grass - temps are teens/low 20's. I'm a winter person, but I was not ready for this just yet ( I haven't gotten a chance to get my garlic and some clearance sale perennials...
So the urates are waaay different than they were 4-5 days ago when they were watery and stringy (for lack of a better word). So I am glad to see them more "solid". I do have a small (2 gal.) waterer in there that I refresh daily (with a gallon of water + electrolyte/probiotic powder) and it...
Cool. Have pretty much left our the yogurt as she doesn't seem interested anyway. Started adding in her feed (with grit) yesterday and mixing probiotics powder in with the rice buttermilk mixture.
The runs seem to have abated - if I'm reading these poops - from this morning - properly. Thoughts...
Thanks for walking me through that...hope those changes got saved... will get coop photos hopefully this weekend (I can't manage to get in there with the camera while it's still light enough).
Totally helps...there are large screened openings (almost 2sq.ft. each) up top on opposing walls that we roughly boarded up (left a crack around the perimeter). My plan was to remove some of the boarding, but I was unsure of how much...your 6 inch vents gives me a good guideline.
As for the...
I got the drafty windows covered in plastic and have left the upper joints open and may even open the upper windows up a bit more. We will be doing some rearranging of boxes and roosting bars because they're not laying where we want them to and will look at incorporating a poop board.
Talk to...
Thanks so much for all the suggestions. I've really used them as road map and I think I'm seeing progress. I've basically figured out how to get the antibiotic syringed into her beak myself, though she is NOT a fan and it's a little sticky. But we have a morning dose and a nighttime dose -...
Thanks for asking! It's been a busy couple of days, but I think I'm seeing progress. I've basically figured out how to get the antibiotic syringed into her beak myself, though she is NOT a fan and it's a little sticky. But we have a morning dose and a nighttime dose - hopefully I'm not totally...
I know this is a pretty old thread, but it's been quite helpful. We have a 6+ month old pullet with similar symptoms and couldn't get a diagnosis from the vet, but did get SMZ-TMP antibiotic and started her a few days ago. This thread gives me lots of good ideas for what kinds of foods to offer...
Excellent... I think that's what I'm seeing? (See most recent poops below - do I take it as a good sign yhatvthose urates aren't in a puddle?). I've also given her some rice and tuna which she ate up (~1\3 cup of tuna). Maybe will sprinkle some wet feed and a little grit on the tuna next...
Thanks, really helpful info. So if she was free-ranging until midday yesterday, that's why her poop looks mostly like grass. Given that for the last 12-15 hours she's only eaten squash, apples, yogurt and a bit of bread soaked in electrolyte/probiotic water, should I expect to see her poop...
Had your breakfast yet? Here's more poop pictures...one from overnight and a couple from this am. The most recent is the photo on the silver tarp. Any idea what the red/brown seed looking things are? Normally i would have thought it was the wild bird food they get sometimes from under the bird...
