10 month old laying hens west michigan

I have 5 hens I can part with. Barnyard mix, hatched in my classroom last June. I'm getting too many eggs... all are laying pretty much daily. Varying shades of brown, but someone lays a white egg just not sure who. Looking for $25 each or 5 for $100

    Fully developed chicks not hatching?

I run mine super low and watch the air sack. if it gets too big I increase humidity. That being said, I also keep the humidity super high during lockdown and hatch (like water is condensing on the windows high). For that reason I pull my chicks out immediately after they hatch cuz they will...

    Fully developed chicks not hatching?

I keep my humidity low, 20-30%. I've been far more successful this way.

when to adjust incubator heat for hatching

I just bought the cheapest humidity sensor/temp sensor on amazon and stuck it inside... I could look down through the window and see it.

when to adjust incubator heat for hatching

Just to check... you are not going by the temp on the actual incubator are you? I hatched only 4 of my first batch of 30 because I was using the incubator thermometer. Got a digital cheap one that I put in the incubator for my second hatch and hatched 17 of 22... The digital was also clearly...

    Incubator to brooder

I take mine out as soon as they are hatched... I find that they take forever to dry in the incubator with the humidity up and they knock all the other eggs around while they're flopping about. I've never lost one from doing this, and I have a much higher hatch rate by taking them out than when I...

LeAnn's "adopt me" bargain-- What are you getting??? Please post pics

I'm just curious what people are getting for this... I had gone back and forth between the cackle surprise and the "adopt me"... Decided on the Meyer "adopt me" mostly because they will NOT have ducks (I don't want ducks). I know people get this, I'm just curious what you've gotten from this...

    I'm in over my head

I've had similar situations and it hasnt' been a problem. The younger "grow out" chicks aren't likely to challenge a mama, or at least they didn't in my pen. I had 3 mamas fighting over 2 nesting spaces. They finally hatched out (it was seriously musical chickens, every day, it was funny) and...

What kind of chick is this?

My black copper marans always start with a couple of white feathers as well... could be that. I've never had australorps so I can't compare. ETA: Just saw the white spot on the head... I think that means it'll be barred? I'm not sure how the cuckoo gene works but maybe a cuckoo marans?

    Laced Polish possibly rooster?

I think those are both hens... the roos tend to have pointy hair feathers and the hens have rounded ones. Those both look rounded.

    Fence Height

Yes... Yes I have. Mine perch at the top of my 8' fence. That being said, most of them don't bother to even try to fly over the 4' section, but they really do love to hop over that 8' section. go figure. And it's only a few of the chickens. but it's the same few every day. A rooster, a...

Can anyone identify breed, and hen or roo?

They look like hens to me, but I'm pretty sure the age is off, they look closer to 3 or 4 months old, not laying yet. Their combs haven't gotten red.

    Ameraucana or EE, and gender??

get a good shot of the comb on Sue... Pea combs are really obvious about gender once you know what to look for. I can tell mine by about 8 weeks usually. 1 row of peas VS 3 rows. Wider (3 rows) is a cockerel, 1 row is a hen.

    Barred Rock X Easter Egger?

I have LOTS of barred easter eggers... My roo has 2 barring genes, so all of my chicks from the green eggs are barred. Some have straight comb and some have pea comb. Most of the pea combs have cheeks and muffs. They're lots of fun, i especially love my barred roo with yellow legs, pea comb...

newly hatched chick feet are not right

I used tape to fix the toes of my first ever incubator hatch chick. I simply put a piece of scotch tape on the bottom, put chick foot on, then a piece over the foot, pressing down between toes to seal. The were like little chicken booties just to keep the toes properly laid out. 24 hours later...

What I've learned about incubating and hatching eggs

Update: So I ended up with a staggered hatch over almost a week. when I started this thread, I had 26 eggs that were due over the course of 3 days, and 20 had hatched. Well, no more of those did hatch. When I looked at them, I had D written on 2 of them (my hint that I think the embryo is...

What I've learned about incubating and hatching eggs

So, this round was my 3rd round of egg incubation. But I'm a scientist at heart, experiments, cause and effect, etc. At the beginning of the summer I finally broke down and bought an incubator. I was going to be out of town, so I splurged for the turner as well. Here's what I bought...

splash chick??? What does it look like at hatch?

Marans roo is blue copper, not cuckoo. The other roo is barred rock. And yeah, the red lamp is killing the pics. I wasn't planning to post them! Thanks tho ;) I can definitely tell the offspring from the barred roo, I've been breeding him a while and he clearly has 2 barring genes so he's...
