Just having an auto door to open during the day won't be enough - they will alter their behavior to be active during the day to feed. It needs to be a feeder they can't use...and that your chooks don't spill much with.

That sounds about right! How much space do you have for them? (i.e. how many chickens can you comfortably house?)

That's only 16 out of 44 (plus the boys) - not counting the littles, so that means the rest are younger and still laying fairly regularly....I think you are just trying to talk yourself into some chicken math (which is okay - nothing wrong with that!);)
As he gets older - he will learn manners - 'kids' aren't chivalrous when very young- they learn it as they age. No worries - if he doesn't learn it naturally, his 'elders' will 'peck it into him' !:D

Please let me know how the weighing of a little one goes - I am wondering how accurate it is on the low end if it goes up to 110 lbs. If it seems to be good with Chippy versus one of the smaller ones - then that is a good sign.

If she was a he, you would be seeing more roo characteristics. My hens/pullets with slightly curved tail feathers - those tend to be a bit longer than the others, but not as long as a rooster's flag feathers. Her tail feather is well within the length of a hen's slightly curved & longer tail...
