I need to know from anyone. How do you catch a very wary chicken. I moved them to a new kennel but some won't go in the coop. I catch some every night when they "go to bed" but the ones left are too scared and run too quickly. I even put vodka in the water to no avail!! Would they follow...

    Decrowing Roosters.

I have a problem. I obtained some adult birds from a hatchery and one little hen is not being accepted. I have to keep food and water separate in another part of the barn for her. Then I have another from a previous batch that is left from the neighbor's dog's kill of 14 chickens. She really...

I had my coop made inside the barn and the man who did it had had chickens. He made the rope thing for the hatch and I can't see outside when I lower it. I have to go outside and put a bd over the hatch and be sure "everyone" is inside so I don't close someone out for the night. Of course I...

Years ago -maybe 70!!! my mother would raise white jersey giants from chicks (in the spring) and sell them for meat in fall. These are called "fryers",. the most tender. Any age older will be for stewing. It depends on whether you want to eat them as a chicken dinner or use them in recipes...

Do hens lay their eggs before a certain time of the day?

Could she have been too warm? Heat is a problem with chickens. They will sit with their wings out a little to get air to their body.

Do hens lay their eggs before a certain time of the day?

I found eggs in a planter and other places outside. One person said he found an egg in the crotch of a tree. You may find eggs anywhere, but the rule is to keep them in the coop at least until noon. Probably the reason you are not getting eggs from the ones that you did before, is they found...

Do hens lay their eggs before a certain time of the day?

Some do not start laying until 10-12 mons. I have Australorps but when they do start laying, it's almost everyday. I can tell when I have a new one start laying. I find the eggs on the floor or wherever. They usually find where the others lay and learn. And they don't always lay in the...

    Decrowing Roosters.

In case you didn't get my earlier reply. I would like to know if you can explain this procedure to another vet. I am giving some chickens to my daughter and son-in-law and my rooster - until I get moved closer to them. He is quiet and a non attacker! I want him for fertilization of eggs...

    Decrowing Roosters.

Could you describe this to another vet. I am giving some chickens to my daughter but she can't have a rooster (noise). Her husband is a vet. The email address is [email protected].. I will make him aware you are sending him the instructions. I really want to keep this rooster too...

    Calling all lakenvelder owners

Getting chickens to warm up to you. Use the same container to put food in their feeder every time. When they see the container they will flock to you! After a while they will know you won't hurt them. Mine still do not like to be touched. That's ok with ;me, I don't want to touch them.

My hens are great. The roosters were either protectors or just mean. Why are roosters that way? One killed the other at night in the coop! Maybe it's like some other wild animals, the males fight over the females and their territory. I had other kinds of males tho and they were not aggessive at...

    Best Dog to watch chickens

My black lab is not interested in the chickens. She was inside when she was aroused and I always look to see if someone is here. This time something was here -the neighbors dogs and they had killed 8 of them already by the time she heard them. However, would a dog keep another dog from doing...

    Best Dog to watch chickens

I have a black lab. She didn't hear the neighbors dogs when they came to kill 11 of my chickens. All dogs have to be trained. I'm not sure how to train one to watch over the chickens. I made her stay outside and kept saying watch. She finally laid down and stopped whining to get in. I am...

That last picture is definitely a roo. How can you tell the difference between a JG and an Aussie? My Aussies all have greenish and blueish sheens to their feathers and had black with yellow tints on the legs.

    Roman Catholics!

It's also St Francis. And while the subject is controversial for some, I just learned from my first grandchild (married with 2 little girls) that she is converting!! My prayers are finally being answered. I have been the only one who stayed with the church in all of my siblings, husband and...

    Roman Catholics!

Something went wrong! I did not ask St Francis to watch over my chickens and he didn't. The neighbors dogs killed 11 of them at two different times. I only have two left and they seem so lonely. He will make it right he said. We'll see when he has to drive 2 hours to get adult Australorps...

Never Again am I ordering from McMurray

they sent just 3 birds for replacement? My hatchery will not send anything less than 15. When I ordered from McMurray years ago, they also would only give me a replacement with the next order as does Townline.

The picture of the cockrel here, looks exactly like my Austrlorp male. Aren't the feet supposed to be yellow on a giant? My Aussie had mostly black feet and legs but a bit of yellow here and there.
