Deep Litter | Am I doing it right...?

We too converted a Little Tykes playhouse for our girls and decided to try the deep litter method. For Some reason nothings breaking down. I rake it daily and add straw and shavings but it seems to just be a big mix of lots of poop and straw. We live in the High Desert w/ almost no moisture so...

Thank you for the advice I'll definitely cut back on all the fruit, seeds and mealworms, it's just so cute to walk into my bedroom and see four little sets of eyes staring in through the sliding glass door, begging for a meal worm, ha ha. Are greens ok to feed daily? We also sprout mung beans...

REALLY STINKY wet chicken poo in sand run and coop :P

Thank you for all the suggestions. I think I'll try FF again. I did it for a very short time but the particular food I was using was heavy in fish meal and the smell was taking over my kitchen I've since switched over to a nice organic non gmo feed that isn't "fishy". For now I think I'll leave...

Thank you Triple Willow. I'm happy to hear the DLM disappears! Thats very encouraging Is your run out in the weather or does it have a covered roof? Our coop sits in their run area that happens to be the side yard of our house so it's not covered. There are trees that cover most of it but they...

REALLY STINKY wet chicken poo in sand run and coop :P

Do you use the Deep Litter Method in the whole run or only in the coop area? Its usually so very dry here in the high desert that we don't get really good compost w/o continually wetting it, which brings me back to my orig issue of wet stinky poo I have to admit I'm regretting wheel barreling...

    Nevadans?

HI Barb I have a cousin that lived near Portola and worked in Reno for a while. The drive wasn't bad traffic wise because it's not a heavy used highway out that way but it sometimes a hassle in the snow. Especially on hway 395 coming up over the hill near Cold Springs. Believe it or not...

    Growing fodder for chickens

I've noticed after day three of growth, right as the little sprouts start that the 3 root hairs start to look almost fuzzy, like mold but not. Tiny white strands of hairs. After I rinse that day they're fine...could this be mold or is this how they grow? Thank you
