Is this a good idea or not

Thank you all for the great responses. Here is what I have taken from this conversation. The gal that we will be getting the egg from is a friend and lives 5 minutes from us. We are just inside the cities boundry and she is in a rural area about a half a mile away. She is more than willing to...

Is this a good idea or not

Hi All, here is what I am thinking of doing. We think we want another chicken but would rather not raise a chick by itself and then introduce it to the other three. I have three pullets and one has already gone broody but I got her broke and she is back to normal. I presume that she will go...

All in one & none in the others!

They all have there favorite box. I only have three pullets two of which are sisters and the third and smallest one is a month older and she is the Queen and always uses the same next box. The sisters will use that same box only when the queen is not in there. If she is in there they will use...

Pullet has not laid an egg in a week

It was 5 weeks since we broke her. I did not think she was ever going to get back to laying. I don't know if this has anything to do with her going broody but since she seems to be a tad bit more aggressive when giving treats. Nothing to be alarmed about but she was really shy before but now has...

Pullet has not laid an egg in a week

Just a quick update on my broody pullet. We finally got an egg from her today.:ya It has been 2 days shy of five weeks since she went broody and last laid an egg. I thought that there was an underlying problem with her but I am gong to assume that it takes some chickens longer than others to get...

Pullet has not laid an egg in a week

Thanks for the replies. I was thinking the worst for this pullet. I am hopeful that she will start laying again soon. On a side note, I did not think that chickens will go to that extreme to protect an egg. I have gained a whole new level of respect for my birds. I now have to go tend to my...

Pullet has not laid an egg in a week

Hi All, I have been out of touch for a while as summer is in full effect. I do apologize for that. I am a little concerned about one of my pullets. I only have three but one seemed to go broody last Monday as she was on a nest for a day and a half. As I was checking for eggs the second day...

    Technical coop building question.

Your chicks look like they are enjoying you and their coop and run. I gotta agree with you and Aart about the new forum platform but as they say "change is good"

Soft shell eggs then normal eggs then soft shell again

Just an update. All three pullets have started to lay normal eggs. This was the second day that all three had hard shell eggs. one of the EE'ers has a smaller egg but I think all in good time they will get bigger. No more worries

Designing my coop... Poop tray question

I second Ol Grey Mares post. Poop boards are worth their weight in gold whether it is a fixed board or sliding. I myself have a stationary board filled wit PDZ also. I have a small coop so reaching in every morning to clean it is no big deal for me. It only takes me a couple of minutes a day

Thank you oldhenslikesdogs, that all give me peace of mind. Looking forward to normal eggs soon

Soft shell eggs then normal eggs then soft shell again

That is awesome. I will get rid of the layer feed and off to the store for a bag of all flock. This is great. Just a FYI, I did not think that I would get any eggs today since I had three soft shell ones on the poop board this morning but I got an egg from the oldest pullet today. I am...

Soft shell eggs then normal eggs then soft shell again

That is good to know. I give the three of them about a cup full of veggies a day. Lettuce, corn, peas etc and an occasional dandelion which they go nuts over. I hope that is not to much. If I may ask what feed has that high of protein that is good for our pullets. Thank you so much for the advise

Soft shell eggs then normal eggs then soft shell again

Thank you for the reply. I don't think it is predators as they are locked up at night and my dogs don't seem to be sniffing around the coop and run looking for a strange smell of a predator but you never know. I will keep a close eye on that. I hope it is the new sensation and all will be OK in...

Soft shell eggs then normal eggs then soft shell again

Hi All, Never had chickens before and have done a ton of research on this site, Here is my question, I have 3 pullets, one of which has been laying a normal egg for about 3 weeks now. She has only missed 2 days of not producing an egg. My other two just started 3 days ago( they are 4 weeks...

Small Coop in the Nebraska Winters?

I have a 4'X4' coop and we have 3 mutt chickens. I put them out in the coop the first week of January when they were 8 weeks old and they did great with the cold. I would put them out side for a few hours a day when they were between 2 and 8 weeks old to help acclimate them. I do not keep food...

    Technical coop building question.

The paint job on the coop is awesome. I agree with Aart about the clouds. I have two questions for you. Why do you have the pair of car ramps in front of the run door. I have a set of those that I have not used in years but will not get rid of them for some reason and you might have a reason for...
