Thanks for the advice guys.
The break is right at the bottom of the nostrel, it seems to be bleeding a little less now, but still worrysome. Because it's so close to the breathing, I think I'll leave off the super glue. He's so high strung around humans that it's doing him more harm to try...
Sigh, my Cockerel has a broken upper beak, mostly snapped off (hanging by a small amount of beak at the top) right below the nostril. It's bleeding a medium amount, but not a huge amount. He's been drinking water and investigating some porridge I made him from starter mix.
Is there any way...
I've tried the scaly leg mite treatment you mention. It works on about 99% of chickens (I've had a lot of rescue chickens over the years, so there's been lots of problems to cure - I'm no stranger to worms and other ailments), but every now and again, I get a chicken where it just wont work...
Probably
Should I worry? Will it effect the quality of life for the chicken?
She/he is just over a year old now and has been laying since about 8 months old. Seems to be healthy in every regard except the gender confusion.
I know, right?
If it was anyone else telling me this story, I would say that they just made a mistake - it wasn't a girl to start with, or someone else must be laying the eggs.
But it WAS a girl to start with, and it is still laying eggs (I caught it in the act twice this year alone). And...
*sigh of relief*
So it does happen to other people's chickens.
I've a hen that crows, but that's only for earthquakes and because the roo of the flock is more a lover than a fighter. But I've never had full gender change before, which this is except for the egg laying.
This Buff Brahma...
I have a few years of chicken raising under my belt, and a few hundred chickens over those years. I feel I need to tell you this because what comes next is kind of odd to me. Never seen this before, and I need you to understand I know what I'm talking about.
I have a transgendered chicken...
Looks like it's not digesting it's food properly.
Perhaps an infection or perhaps parasites. Could be it just doesn't have the correct gut bacteria to eat the food. Or it could be she just ate something wrong that day.
Is she on layer pellets? If so, try mixing it with water/milk for a...
What's the next step to getting rid of worms when you've tried just about everything else?
I have a 4 year old sussex cross roo who has been very poorly lately. Other than scaly mites (that won't go away with regular smothering treatment of oil/bag balm massage once a week for over a year)...
Here are some more photos of her foot. That black band around the toe with it being obviously worse on the bottom of the foot.
You can also see the scaly mite problem - which I've been treating for 3 years now with no signs of going away. She started having it at a few weeks old, which I've...
I forgot to mention, I've found a corrilation between lack of grit and breathing problems/sneezing durring the winter months. Usually I give them some extra sand and they gobble it up and start getting better.
I don't know why this is, some sort of connection between digestion and breathing...
Most smoke should be okay, especially if there is enough airflow. However, there are some plants that can be VERY toxic to chickens (and humans) when burnt. Spurge Laurel (goes by many other names) is one of them.
As a side note, if the pile is really big (like over a yard across) then it's...
Sounds like you care a lot about these birds. Hope someone here can help. Keeping the coup clean is a good place to start.
Question, why cedar? Most varities of that tree can cause cancer - I don't think your chickens have this, as it takes years, but still... Personally I tend to stay far...
A picture would help a lot.
Forgive me for starting with the usual things, it sounds like you care a lot about her and have probably already covered them, but it's a place to start.
Is she getting the right feed for her age? Not too many processed foods? Have you tried switching from...
It could be a vitamin deficiency. I had a young hen get rickets once, it was similar symptoms and age to what you describe. Make sure the food is fresh as vit. D can degrade from the feed in a little as 3 months, other vits also degrade over time. Also make sure it's the right food for the...
There is something wrong with Henny Penny's foot. It's different from the usual things I've encountered and I'm wondering if you could help me figure out what's wrong and how to treat it.
Hen history:
Henny Penny (I know not the most creative name, but she seems to like it) is almost 3...
