    6th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2015 Hatch-A-Long

I know that one the hard way! Several years after having a tubal, I had to be rushed to the ER and very nearly died because I had an ectopic pregnancy (in the fallopian tubes) and it burst the tube. Almost bled to death by the time they discovered the problem and stopped the bleeding. Not...

You and Harry Potter! I had thought it was caused by the yolk being scrambled (usually from shipping), but I had to cull eleven that were seeping this time and I cracked them all open to examine and the yolks were intact on all but two. So I am at a loss.

Those are cuties! That's incredible Ron! Oooooo. I bet you're right! Apparently I was too tired when reading as that never entered my mind. Love it! For water candling, you aren't looking for the egg to sink or float. You are just watching for it to rock and wiggle in the water...

I just did a quick google search and found this: "As the body size of the serama varies vastly from A to C class weights as does the egg size. Most larger A class birds lay small eggs which usually prove to be viable, B class birds can be productive breeders with C class birds usually laying...

    Keeping Chickens Free Range

3 acres will be more than sufficient for 16 birds. You'll find they will still tear something up now and again no matter how much space they have, but they won't eat it bare with so much space. I think when they really dig a spot up, it is because they found something yummy there and they want...

Mine would never turn up their beaks at hotdog! In fact, I think they'd probably take my arm off to get the hotdog pieces if I didn't throw them fast enough! They LOVE them.

Got my candling done. I culled 11 that were seeping. 3 were shipped SFH, 5 were LO that had been sitting in a bucket any which way in the fridge for I don't know how long, the last 3 were LO that were collected and stored/turned properly (collected on 11/20, 12/1, and 12/11). So far only 16...

    6th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2015 Hatch-A-Long

Ok, I'm off to lock up the chickies and then candle my chickies to be. I'll report after I get them all done. LOL!! Is it just me or are these fines getting steeper? The smelling will only tell you if you've got an egg going rotten, not if there is anything growing or not. I'm not sure at...

Hmmm. Well if you decide to go ahead and put them in, I'd watch them to make sure they aren't going to mess with your broody and disrupt her setting. If they don't seem interested in messing with her, then you could leave them in. I hope you get a better hatch this time. Let us know how it...

    6th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2015 Hatch-A-Long

I think that is probably the case. Is it as funny as when ducklings start getting their quack? I swear they look so shocked and embarrassed when they are peeping along and suddenly this loud SQUONK comes out. Those are great pics. I really hope those bad air cell ones do ok. Yikes! I...

Your blue/green eggs are EASIER to see into? My blue, green and olive eggs are a nightmare to see anything in!! Most times I can just see the air cell and can tell if something is growing inside or not and that is it.

    Percent of hatching shipped eggs!

Shipped eggs are a gamble, but there are some things you can do to try and maximize your chances. First, ask how any prospective seller packs their eggs for shipping. Just getting to you unbroken is not always enough. The shells can be completely intact and the insides still scrambled beyond...
