    IKEA fodder hack :)

Got a question to ask all my friends that raise chickens. Have any of you heard of or tried Buckeye Nutrition Big 4 and Buckeye Nutrition Gold Standard. I found them at a small family feed store and after reading the ingredients and feeding directions (mix with grains) I decided to give it a...

    Mixing chicks???

After 24 hrs they are truly fine. 2 of the chicks where still kinda damp when I took them out of the hatcher. But those 2 seem to the best integrated of them all. If my judgement is right out of all the ones I hatched I think 1 rooster. Future flock coming up - mix of 2 different barnyard...

    Mixing chicks???

I tried to separate my day olds from the 3 week olds. The day olds kept getting through the wire and hanging out with the 3 weeks olds. Got tired of it so I took down the seperater

    Aggressive Rooster

I am expecting my second attempt of using an incubator Feb 24. My first attempt did not turn out well. 1 chick out of 12 and then it drowned. 4 others died in the shell. 7 did not appear to be fertilized. But those were from a lady that had 1 rooster for 12 hens. Update, I yesterday I...

    Aggressive Rooster

I am hand feeding him meal worms, and he does come to me when I call him and the others. The times he has attacked me is the first time day I got him and walked into the coop to check water and feed. The second time was when I was trying to herd them all back into the fenced in area and used...

    Aggressive Rooster

Not new to chickens. Have had roosters before but I raised them and they were very friendly only occasionally showing aggression. But since I lived in town, once they got big enough they got cooked. The 3 younger roosters are about 2 years old. All very big and all with what seems to be...

    Aggressive Rooster

Nope no children - they are grown and gone. I have kicked him but it just gets him more agressive. maybe I didn't kick him hard enough. Luckily he is to big to really jump that high.

    Aggressive Rooster

From what I have seen he is the only rooster that mates with the hens. The other roosters mostly stand guard at the outskirts of the flock. If some hens stray away 1 rooster will follow. He is only aggressive towards me if I try to heard the hens into the cage or reach down to examine a hen...

    Aggressive Rooster

I got a flock of 10 birds free because someone was moving. one of the roosters is rather aggressive. He attacks me if I get too close to the hens unless I have food and those spurs don't feel good. He is pure black copper marans, with feathered legs. He is also the father of the other 3...

I do agree with the aggressive behavior. I watched mine come into the coop and pull my Australorp out of nesting box so she could get into it. Everytime the Astralorp came back she came out and tried to rip her head off. She isn't that way towards the other hens, but does peck at them.

My Barred rock doesn't have yellow legs. They aren't white either. But as others have said, it is a hatchery chicken bought from the feed store. She is missing a toe and part of her comb all because she got to close to the tiller.

Integrating young pullets with mature hens - what's the best age?

I have a similar issue. But it is with all my birds towards the Astralorp. I watched my Blue Andalasian grab the Australorp by the neck and pull it out of a nesting box.

Integrating young pullets with mature hens - what's the best age?

My little ones just run to the dogs. And that is usually the end of it. lol Have one dog that keeps the hens away from the food when I have the chicks out free ranging. I have just started letting them out when I am home so I can go check on them regularly. They are only 4 weeks old...

100% pallets and used lumber. Total cost $50 for the outdoor wood screws. Added the swing just because so many of my friends tag me on the "Chicken Swing" I had to put one on. Currently have 8 hens laying, and 10 chicks growing. Took me 3 weekends to get it built.

I went back yesterday to get some more chick starter. they changed the labeling to Barred Rock / Marans. So I am thinking they got Cuckoo Marans instead of the BCM. Still holding out for a 50% marans out of the 4

The Silver Wyandotte was bought at the same time as these. This is the Silver Wyandotte. I have had her for 2 weeks. The one next to her I have had for 1 week. My Buff Leghorn is either very brave or very stupid. I tossed some dried mealworms on the ground and she flew out of the...

    Mixed breeds

I have a question about some chicks I bought last week on a spur of the moment. The feed store had accidentily mixed Barred Rock chicks with Black Copper Marans chicks. All photos of day old chicks I have seen of the two breeds they look very similar. But with some searching on the internet...
