Roofed roosting bar at night and that's it...anyone with experience?

I had to look it up - I didn’t realize they are non-native in NZ. I’ve never actually seen a hedgehog outside a pet store. I did see a lot of echidna in Tasmania, which are also adorable.

    Decision to butcher rooster?

I don’t yet have any cockerels or hens that are matured beyond laying age, but looking ahead I bought a .22 for just this purpose. I’m planning to take a class in the spring about processing chickens so I’ll be ready when the time comes.

    Decision to butcher rooster?

I’ve only ever used regular chickens from the store to make coq au vin, but do plan to use the recipe with my own since I really like it. The recipe often uses not just mature birds but roosters (coqs).

Okay! so we now know who is laying what!

You only get reparations if the chickens are pets? What a weird rule. I’m glad you’ve got the place secured. That couldn’t have been easy or cheap.

    Not Sleeping for Hours

That’s interesting - mine all go to bed at dusk while there is still some light. But since we’re in a holler with no close neighbors, there is literally no light other than the moon, so it gets very dark in the coop. I hadn’t even thought about them getting to the roost bars early for that reason.

Hi! New here but have been visiting for a few months

Very cool. I actually have one of each of those. My Cinnamon Queen has not yet started laying although she’s in my older set (closing in on 6 months). So far only my Black Sex-link, California Tan, and I think my Calico Princess are laying. By the way, my olive egger was sold to me as an...

Fresh perspective on camouflage for free-ranging chickens

I agree - I need to go back and re-read the whole thing when my mind is fresher because there is a lot here I want to understand. Aside from an anthropology class and a couple of geology classes as an undergrad, this is totally outside my area of expertise.

I have very odd looking Barred Rocks....or do I? Guess who game.

I only have one Wyandotte, and she is a sweetheart. Never gives any other hen any trouble. She has a crossbeak, but seems to be eating fine.

Roofed roosting bar at night and that's it...anyone with experience?

Hedgehogs! They seem too adorable to be a threat - that's news to me. I'm new to chickens so I have no advice, but I'm following with interest and would love to hear about it as you go. I only free range my coop chickens during the day, but am planning a totally free range flock as well for the...

Hi! New here but have been visiting for a few months

Welcome! How great to have a coop all ready to go! How many chickens and what breeds did you get?

My neighbor's kid stole my quail from my yard and after we confronted them he let it loose in the wild, what can I do?

Not sure I'm following that entirely, but the parents are the ones to be upset with more than the disabled child. When I was a kid, there was a boy across the street who had intellectual disabilities from being exposed to rubella in utero. He would sometimes show up in our kitchen at night with...

My neighbor's kid stole my quail from my yard and after we confronted them he let it loose in the wild, what can I do?

My goodness, I hope you are joking. The "brat" in question is a child with apparent developmental delays. You surely aren't suggesting the OP try to shock a child with Down Syndrome and enjoy doing so?

Is it legal in the US to shoot a hawk that is killing your flock?

I'm extremely skeptical that a hawk would try to get a chicken you are holding. But if hawks are getting your chickens while they are free ranging, you need to provide cover of some sort. Ideally, thick vegetation, or hawk netting if you can't do that. Raptors are amazing creatures and I'm happy...

    Free Lunch Chickens! Hawk Attack!

Problem is, she’s not letting those attacks be instructive. The hawk will absolutely not go away as long as there are chickens. Why would it? She could probably make free ranging work if she changed how she did it, like making sure the chickens had plenty of places to go for cover. But if she’s...

    Free Lunch Chickens! Hawk Attack!

It really does sound like her set up isn’t suited for free range as is. I hope she’s able to modify it.

Other Than Chickens, What Do You collect?

And with the adoption of the Euro, there aren’t as many cool coins to be had from European countries.

Other Than Chickens, What Do You collect?

My grandfather had a great coin collection. I have a box full of coins from every country I've traveled to, plus a bunch of bills from different Arabic countries that some man just handed me at the airport in Riyadh when I was 17. (I know, that's not sketchy at all.)

    ¡HELP! WHEEZING CHICKEN

I had a chicken doing the very same thing and I fed her chick crumbles mixed with coconut oil for a couple of days. It went away.

New here and new to raising chickens

Welcome! Poor little things - that's terrible about them falling in the mouse glue traps. (Also a cruel way to dispatch mice.) Good of you to take over their care and I hope it goes well for you.
