If your going to buy from Heartland I don't recommend their chick days, maybe pick up from their store or ship, perhaps that would be less stress on the chicks.
I've purchased twice from them now, on two separate occasions and have had a bad experience both times. Last year I got two goslings...
Oh I'm sure! Out of 18 eggs I had 15 develop and 12 that made it to day 9-10 (on day 14 now with 6 that are still kickin). I'd expect some to get scrambled and not develop at all, but I wondered if other factors could cause early embryonic death.
And then there were 6. Candled tonight probably for the last time, 6 babies moving around, 6 that had chicks in various stages of development that had died :(
Is that common with shipped eggs or was it something else perhaps that I did or didn't do? Perhaps both.)
How are yours doing?
And then there were 12! Threw out two Marans and a BLRW, early quitters. On the plus side all the blue eggs are still going! I thought one of the Am eggs was bad until I saw the chick doing a jig
Sorry, been MIA the last week, I've been sitting on my hands and leaving them be, lol. Today is day 7, and 15 out of 18 are developing! Threw out a BLRW, Isbar and BCM. Pretty good for shipped eggs right? This is my first time shipping.
Ooh good idea! I never thought of using a ziplock bag for suspect eggs! I'm always afraid one is going to explode all over me, so I take them outside and chunk them in a bucket
Woop, can't wait till hatch day, lol. I have a humidity question, the bator is staying around 30% with zero water in it, and between 40-45% with one of the two channels filled. Should I try a "dry" hatch, or keep the one channel filled?
Don't mind at all! I ordered from a BYC member after I found her thread and PM'd her, hopefully this link works . . .

Ok, thank you! They were shipped Saturday and arrived today (Monday) so hoping the trip wasn't too rough! Now to really test the new bator! I ended up with 3 Black Copper Marans, 1 Wheaten Maran, 3 Barnevelders, 3 BLR Wyandottes, 3 Cream Legbars, 3 BBS Ameraucana, 1 lavender Ameraucana and 1...
Look what just arrived! 18 beautiful eggs (3 extra) and all safe and sound! This is my first time with shipped eggs, really happy with the quality! I should leave them to rest pointy end down for 24 hours right?
ok get more eggs!!!! I got it!
Seller is actually going to fire her bator back up and do a test hatch for me! If everything goes well she'll send more my way!
So you guys think that even though none of the eggs showed any signs of developing at day 5 that they still could have been viable? The eggs were not shipped, local pick up.
I'm not sure on the free part, lol, I'm just afraid if it's something going on her end and I get more eggs, free or not...
I did open up each egg, they were all runny, light yellow and no development that I could see. Looked like a runnier version of a fresh egg when you crack it. A lot of the eggs were also porous, and I had one that was rotten and oozing that I threw out yesterday.
I ended up throwing all the eggs out, checked them and nothing developed, correct me if I'm wrong but even at day 5 there should be some signs like veins? I wonder if they were infertile, old, porous or a combination of all three.
She is offering to send me more eggs, but I'm honestly not sure...
Yep, and I threw another one out that was sloshy and bad when I opened it up. I pay for 20 eggs and she gives me 18, then she gives me old rotten eggs. Slightly peeved here.
