My Brodie just hatched 7 chicks! One of them unfortunately died that day and the other 6 were doing great....until today. This is my first time and I decided to let them do it since chickens have been doing this kind of thing forever right? Well I got home from work to a massacre!!! All of...

    The Wyandotte Thread

Thanks everyone. I'm new at this, this small flock is my first experience with owning chickens! Eggs or not, they are so much more fun then I would have thought! They are actually affectionate, and a blast to sit and watch. I just kinda always feel like I'm stumbling through it, if that...

    The Wyandotte Thread

Ok I'm starting to feel defeated haha. Here we are at 26 weeks now and still not one egg. I've seen the squat, the waddles are in, all the signs are there. By still nothing. Is it possible some chickens just don't lay eggs haha.

    The Wyandotte Thread

Hey everybody, I'm starting to get a bit anxious here!!! My girls and roo are now 24 weeks old!!! Waddles and combs are nice and red, the rooster has started crowing (until he sees me, then for some reason won't do it lol). My girls are squaring for the rooster, and they are kicking the...

    Fence height

I have 4 SL Wyandotte's, and I do not clip their wings. I do have an enclosed run attached to their coop, but I leave the gate open during the day; so they can free range as much as they want. There are times that they will actually roost on my deck, or on top of their run on warmer nights...

Waiting on my first eggs!!! Help

I have done some reading on roo behavior. I don't treat him the same as my girls. I move him out of my way, I don't move for him, and I guess you could say I'm more "bossy" with him. My grandfather raises chickens, and he said that he normally only had trouble with the "game" roosters. Is...

Waiting on my first eggs!!! Help

My flock free ranges at their will most of the time, except for nights, when I close the gate to their run that is attached to their coop. Also, you said a mature roo. My rooster is the same age as my girls (23 weeks). They have all been raised together sense they hatched. It may be worth...

Waiting on my first eggs!!! Help

CTken, it seems that the squatting would be because the hens would view me as the rooster. Am I correct in assuming this? If this is the case, should I still expect them to do this; sense I have a rooster? Or should I look for them to squat for him? Thank you for replying!

Waiting on my first eggs!!! Help

i have 3 SLW hens, and 1 SLW rooster. They are 23 weeks old. Waddles and combs are red and they should be laying any day now. I understand it may take longer because of the shorter days tho. Is there anything I need to do to help them along? Feed, extra light, anything like that? Also, I...
