If I could send you the various small ponds in my yard, or the flowing river in the typically shallow creek out back, or - even better - the 1-2 inches of rain we're predicted to get TODAY, I would. The goofy thing is we experienced a 100 year drought in 2011. And now, just 4 years later, we're...
I think there are several breeders out there - experienced and newbie - silently trudging away. I'm one of the silent newbies.
And no advice here, but I'll tell you my plan. I purchased eggs from thespoiledchicken too. (She's wonderful!) Unfortunately, this was the one and only time (so far...
I've been lurking here for quite a bit, but since I am planning to dive headfirst into your lavender project, Trish, I thought I'd chime in because I also think the smokey chicks are fascinating.
So, do you think your adult roo that stayed slightly lighter than your blacks may actually have 2...
Just to give you an example on the timing between internal and external pipping, I have an African goose egg hatching this weekend. I noticed the first attempts at internal pipping on Tuesday night about 9:30 pm. The gosling had totally internally pipped by the next morning (Wednesday). I left...
Yep! I will take the smallest drill bit we have and (after candling to make sure the baby isn't right below), I will slowly hand turn the drill bit through the middle of the fat end of the egg.
I'm glad to hear someone else has chicks that are smaller than others. I currently have 8 that are 5-6 weeks old, and - like you - I have one that is MUCH smaller than the others. I kept thinking maybe it was just a failure to thrive chick, and I kept expecting to find it dead every morning...

I candle mine quite a bit during lockdown... Especially to keep tabs on internal pip progress. If I know one has internally pipped, but I don't see an external pip within a certain amount of time (usually about a day, day and a half), then I will intervene. I stop candling of course...
Ms Jellybean, if you're getting your new birds this weekend, your FF should be in great shape! I know my FF didn't take any time at all to get started... Are you getting chicks or mature birds?
I just hatched several small pullet eggs from TXFlowers. (It was kind of an experiment for me.) Every single one hatched and the chicks really aren't THAT much smaller than the regular egg sized chicks. I also haven't had to do anything different for them... At 5 days old they are playing...
Hmmm... good info! Thanks!
My husband actually saw her off the nest and swimming in the pond this morning, so maybe her broodiness was short lived at 2 days. I would really rather not give her the goslings yet... I've only gotten about 10 eggs apiece so far from my two girls, so I know she...
I have 6 Africans (4 boys, 2 girls) who are in their very first laying season. With the exception of a couple eggs we lost to cranes, I've incubated (or sold for incubating) all 18 of the I eggs they've laid. Out of those 18, only 2 have not developed. One was the very first egg we got and it...
I have no idea if it works with them or not... If I remember, some here had fairly accurate results from attempting to feather sex them a day or two after hatch, while some argued that the technique does not work on this breed. I kinda hope it does since I looked at all 28 of mine this...
Okay, I also have (I think) a broody goose sitting on a nest with no eggs. We have two African females. We got an egg from both on Monday, with nothing since then. I have one girl who has been sitting on their usual nest (they share) for the past two days. She's also covered it in her down and...
As I was reading through the older posts on this thread, there was a couple discussions last year about feather sexing SFH chicks. Is everyone still in agreement that it usually works with this breed?
